Apple 4K TV Black Screen Audio Only in Netflix

I have recently installed the 4K Apple TV. It was working fine until the latest update on January 23rd 2018.

Now Netflix videos play but the screen goes black. You can hear the audio and you can bring up the red control bar but the video is a black screen. I can navigate the menus just fine but as soon as I play any video it goes black. Itunes content works fine. I am not sure about other apps as I only use itunes and Netflix.

I have it connected to a 75" Samsung QLED 4K TV with a certified 4.4.4 SnapAV Binary HDMI 4K cable.

The latest update doesn't give you the option to pick a resolution or "match content"

I have 4 of the new 4K Apple TV's and I turned off automatic updates on the other ones and they are working fine.

Saw a message this morning when ATV wasn't outputting video in netflix saying my HDMI cable doesn't support HDCP, which obviously it does. Rebooted and everything went back to normal.

Somehow the ATV4K loses its ability to output HDCP content after some period of time. I'm sure a bug like that should be resolvable if acknowledged and worked on.

This is what worked for me!

After months of playing around trying to resolve this issue, I finally figured it out.

Go to System > Settings > Reset (or reset and update)

This will reset the Apple TV back to factory settings, you may lose all your apps.

Set up the Apple TV from scratch following the prompts.

My Apple TV said that it needed to automatically change settings on my TV.

I clicked YES and it configured the TV and Apple TV to the correct settings.

Now Netflix works perfectly. No more black screen with audio.

If this works for you please let me know, I want to know if it works for others too.

Good Luck!!

The issue appears to have been fixed in the latest tvOS beta. I have a Sony X800D and after updating my Apple TV 4K to tvOS 11.4.1 the issue completely disappeared. I'm going 7 days straight with no black screens or any other problems. Its been running fine this whole week. I have the auto sleep timer set to 30 minutes and it sleeps and wakes up fine. I highly recommend everyone having problems to update to the tvOS 11.4.1 Beta and see if it solves their issue. I will report back if the problem returns but so far mines running great!

Exact same issue here with a Samsung 4K tv. Seems to have started recently (aka last update).

Right now the fix I have is to switch to a different source and back to the Apple TV source. This seems to force the tv back to the correct resolution.

I switched off the new video settings in the Apple TV (her & framerste) but thus doesn’t fix the problem (but does lessen it).

I’m glad to hear this could be a bug and not a problem that requires a repair...

Well, a found a work around that worked for me. I ran my ATV through my Marantz NR1508 and used it as a hub, then ran that to the A1E. It solved the black screen issue. When I hooked the ATV directly back to the A1E, the issue came right back so what ever the issue is between the ATV and a lot of televisions is not an issue with my Marantz. Since the Marantz has HDR10 and Dolby Vision pass through...., everything works great. Been running this about 4 months now, the issue is completed gone for me.

Hello all!

Had same problem with black screen.

Found solution!!! Is below.

In mu case it was black screen, with sound and actually apple tv was working just black screen.

Problem appeared after update of firmware on my android based tv.

Restart of tv and restart of apple tv was jot helping.

Changing of source display, and back to apple tv was also not helping.

Solution: enter tv settings. In my case point called: picture style, it was as personal setup after update of tv, and i just put standard, and black screen dissapeared.

Let me know if worked with you,

Hope my post will be helpful.

I'm on my third AppleTV 4K with these same issues. Even updating to tvOS 11.4 the issue still exists. Everything works fine until I turn off the TV and return later to watch again. Everything in Netflix works except when I play content the video is black and caption and audio are working fine. On Amazon Prime content simply does not load. On directTV NOW the content just stops with black video and if I back up one level everything works again.

The only way to fix this is a restart of the AppleTV after which everything works great until the next time I turn off the TV.

I had a case open with Apple, escalated to the highest level, where they barely acknowledged this was a know issue. I have dealt with this for 3 months now.

I'm using a brand new Sony Bravia 4K (930E).

I have the Sony A1E OLED and 64 gb Apple TV 4k (Stunning picture quality I must say). I had the same problem when the Apple TV was plugged into any HDMI port directly on the TV but I did find what appears to be a permenant solution.

I purchased a 4K Marantz AVR (NR1508), ran the Apple TV through that, then ran the Marantz to the TV via ARC, and whala, that problem disappeared. Going on close to a month now no issues. The Marantz allows 4k and Dolby Vision pass-through and has the added benefit of directly decoding the audio.
