Apple 4K TV Black Screen Audio Only in Netflix

I have recently installed the 4K Apple TV. It was working fine until the latest update on January 23rd 2018.

Now Netflix videos play but the screen goes black. You can hear the audio and you can bring up the red control bar but the video is a black screen. I can navigate the menus just fine but as soon as I play any video it goes black. Itunes content works fine. I am not sure about other apps as I only use itunes and Netflix.

I have it connected to a 75" Samsung QLED 4K TV with a certified 4.4.4 SnapAV Binary HDMI 4K cable.

The latest update doesn't give you the option to pick a resolution or "match content"

I have 4 of the new 4K Apple TV's and I turned off automatic updates on the other ones and they are working fine.

Saw a message this morning when ATV wasn't outputting video in netflix saying my HDMI cable doesn't support HDCP, which obviously it does. Rebooted and everything went back to normal.

Somehow the ATV4K loses its ability to output HDCP content after some period of time. I'm sure a bug like that should be resolvable if acknowledged and worked on.

Great that you found a solution but that shouldn't be necessary....! It means that the Marantz doesn't loose the connection between the Apple TV as it seems to do now with the Sony A1. If I'm not interested of buying any additional surround system I'm paying a lot of money to just get my Apple TV to work as it actually should 😁...

In Europe Sony still haven't released tge Dolby Vision update for the A1 which also ***** by the way *haha...

I agree - what a fantastic TV and picture.

Have you heard anything else or have other good information about this problem that you could share? All the best

Thanks Alex

I'm on my third Apple TV and still having this problem with the Sony A1 TV. When I set it up - the only change I make except making the Apple TV config the video settings is to change the cable to 4:2:2 from 4:2:0. Since I use a high speed cable it should work. Of course I let the Apple TV check first and "calibrate" with the new cable setting and the picture is clear and nice so I suppose it should work....

Man this *****.. 4000 EUR TV and the best Apple Tv on the market and it feels like an old PC computer from the 90s....LOL

Hi all, having the same problem with my brand new Sony KD9005 TV and Apple tv 4k bought the same day, all new hdmi cables, high bandwith enabled on both ends and working fine, BUT. When i leave my apple tv(as it turns itself off) i come back finding it eather still on after quite some time or in best case off as it is supposed to... i have set it to turn itself off after 30 mins of inactivity, but this almost never happens. but those few times the apple tv turns itself off as it is supposed to, i enter eather GET(norwegian tv app) or netflix og amazon prime, and video doesnt come on, only audio with subtitles or just subtitles...

I'm abviously seing a trend going on here between Sony tv's and apple tv... seems to me they have come up with two updates since these problems started coming up and samsung and other tv brands have a fix, but not sonys... why? i am about to sell my apple tv and use my built in netflix app on my sony tv and... chromecast is just better 🙂 good luck guys!

My AppleTV 4K does not go completely black in Netflix, but it does constantly appear to drop frames resulting in a brief but extremely annoying black screen. A lot. Dozens of times per hour.

I'm using the latest full release of Apple TV software on a Sony XBR 65 A1E OLED TV, with recently purchased, quality HDMI cables, relayed through a Denon AVR-X4300H 4K receiver with Dolby Atmos support.

The TV is running the latest Sony firmware that supports Dolby Vision and other HDR codecs. The Apple TV has frame matching and HDR turned on

Killing and restarting the Netflix app on the Apple TV does not improve the situation.

Restarting the Apple TV, unplugging HDMI and plugging it back in does not help.

Connecting the Apple TV directly to the TV 4K HDMI input does not help.

Power cycling the TV does not help.

Basically I've tried everything mentioned in all of these forums, to no avail.

The much-reviled Amazon Prime app does not exhibit this occasional dropped frame problem; only the Netflix app does this. 4K iTunes movies work fine. This all argues (I think pretty convincingly) that the Netflix app is the source of the problem.

Was the update for the appletv software or the Netflix app?

I bought an Apple4kTV in Sept 2018 and constantly having the black screen since I bought it. I spend more time trying to resolve the “Problem” than I get to actually watch it. I have tried all so-called solutions with no luck. I have also paused a show for 2 minutes then resumed it only to get the black screen again, then spent over an hour switching box off, tv off numerous times before it decides to work. SO FRUSTRATING.

Well this thread, while informative, is disheartening as well. I have a brand new Sony XBR 65X900F TV that has experienced the same issue. I will try the restart option people have mentioned but what a pain. Really stinks Apple doesn't seem to be even acknowledge it. My Apple TV worked just fine for a year on my Samsung Plasma bought in early 2014. It wasn't 4K though.

Well.... What is wrong with Apple these days? Hello Mr. Jobs - please send someone a kick in the a** - PLEASE.

Short of taking my AppleTV4K out in the road and running over it multiple times, there seems to be nothing to fix this issue.

Netflix will play but without video while the banners, menu etc. are showing and audio is there. Amazon Prime gives me the HDMI HDCP error.... This was working until a recent upgrade. And how interesting is it that anything I bought on iTunes plays just fine?

I have a new Anthem AVM60, new LG OLED 65, ALL NEW 4K HDMI CABLES.

I've tried everything in this thread, reinstalled apps, stood on my head.... Without a single piece of info from Apple, I'm just going to have to say that they have lost all engineering excellence. I am sorely disappointed.

Please respond if you have a solution.

Thanks, Players1xx - I'll give it a try and let ya know.

I'm also going to check the Netflix and Amazon forums - the Apple update may now require that other apps "catch up" to their recent changes.

I think if you have a product offering - like ATV4K - it should be your responsibility to ensure all the pieces are well integrated and functioning properly.
