Problems with programs crashing

I have several programs that crash when I attempt to import a file under High Sierra. All indicate a runtime error of some sort. Is this a High Sierra bug that needs fixed? Anyone else with this problem?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, macOS High Sierra (10.13.3)

That Mac has been affected by adware—a scam that generates revenue simply by using your Mac. You don't get the income. In return you get a Mac that won't work.

Adware doesn't get installed on its own. To learn how to recognize adware that you don't install it to begin with, please read How to install adware. It's getting a bit dated but the principles remain the same: don't install junk. I have yet to encounter a single example of adware that doesn't do exactly what it says it's going to do.

Click the [Remove/Report] links to remove adware or update the whitelist of legitimate software.

Do that.

Get rid of "Kaspersky" and don't install "cleaning" products. Those things are scams too.

Feb 7, 2018 6:46 PM in response to Jlenco

Several suggestions: If the crash report appears on a "Send to Apple" window, you can copy the text of the report and paste it in a reply to this discussion. Otherwise, you can launch the Console app (it's in your Mac's Utilities folder) and find crash reports in its Sidebar. Or, you can download and run EtreCheck which generates a summary of your system including crash reports: https://etrecheck.com/

Feb 8, 2018 12:52 PM in response to Jlenco

The effects of using "cleaning" scams generally require erasing the affected Mac and restoring its content from unaffected sources. There are a number of steps to take before resorting to that solution, but that is what I do with any Mac that has been so affected.

Back up the Mac and post an updated Etrecheck report to confirm the absence of dubious files. The next step would be to reinstall macOS. If that doesn't work you will need to erase it, so be sure your backups (plural) are intact. Just one backup isn't sufficient for my requirements.

> I have several programs that crash when I attempt to import a file under High Sierra.

This crash is due to a problem with iCloud Drive and High Sierra. The crash log always reports the crash on the 'com.apple.NSXPCConnection.m-user.com.apple.bird' thread with a reason of "-[NSURL fp_scopeDescription]: unrecognized selector..."

This has been reported to Apple via their Bug Reporter and I have also opened a Developer Technical Support incident for this.

Currently the only known solution is to turn off iCloud Drive and then turn it back on. Understandably, this can be an arduous task if you have a lot of files stored on the iCloud Drive. Steps to fix this problem have been posted here...

http://www.leisterpro.com/doc/v12/questions/answers/macosbug.php

I hope that Apple soon releases a fix for this problem. While it does not affect many people -- it is quite the imposition for the ones who have been affected.
