Can't add contacts on Mac

I have been unable to add new contacts to my Apple contacts using my Mac. After hitting the ➕, I start filling in the information and it leaves the new contact and pulls up an existing one, and not always the same one. I tried saving the new contact after every field entry and yet when I search for it, it is not there. I have had to default to entering them on my iPhone, which is slower but at least it works! Anyone else seen this, and any solutions?

iMac, macOS High Sierra (10.13.3)

You must be signed with Apple ID( your webmail address like gmail must be same as Apple ID ) in iCloud account .

Open address book through spotlight , and preferences - click on iCloud and uncheck the box of enable this account .

Click on finder > Go > hold option key > Library > Application support - drag and drop Address book folder to the desktop .

Restart the machine , and again check the box of enable this account .

The new address book folder will be generated when Mac is restarted .
