Mac can't connect to iCloud

OSX 10.11.6 I just started getting this pop up: "This Mac can’t connect to iCloud because of a problem with ...... (my Apple ID/email address). Open iCloud preferences to fix this". When I open preferences it directs me to enter my Apple ID password which I do then I get a message "an error has occured". Can you help me please?

Thank you, thank you! Via Preferences I accessed iCloud (rather than via internet accounts) and was able to sign out. I did not open a new account but did log back in with the same account and all now seems to be resolved. When I accessed iCloud thru the internet accounts it asked me for my PW and accepted it without any error message. No more warning pop-ups. Thank you once again for helping me resolve this issue.

Can you successfully log into Manage your Apple ID with the ID that you are trying to use with your Mac?

Then your Mac may believe that it is already signed out.

Try the following:

  • Create a new user account.
  • Log out of your existing account, and then, log back in with this new account.
  • Go to System Preferences > iCloud, and set up your iCloud account again.
  • Were you successful doing so with the new account? If so, then there is something amiss with your original account. If not, then you may need to contact Apple directly for further assistance with this matter.
