iPhone X poor call sound with bluetooth in car

I have bluetooth handsfree built in to my car (Land Rover discovery 4) which was worked perfectly with both iPhone 4 and iPhone 6, the call sound quality was excellent. Now that I have an iPhone X the sound on phone calls is awful, with crackling and noise and is very difficult to hear clearly. I have update my phone but nothing has changed.

The bluetooth sound connection to wireless headphones is fine, and the car is still fine if I try the old phones.

Not really related but if anyone is searching here for problems generally wanted to share how I solved my problem.

I have an iPhone 7 and no other devices involved. No Apple watch either. Despite having good connection and sound quality I suddenly started to have big problems with hearing the call from my phone. Via the cars Bluetooth connection. I would have long periods of losing the caller with it suiddenly to return so was having to blag that I’d heard the whole conversation. After months of intermittently trying to resolve incl trips to the Applestore it suddenly dawned on me - and the fact that I’m clearly a numpty!! I had the sound on my phone at its lowest level/turned off!! Once I returned this to maximum level problem was solved. Can’t believe I was so daft but then again the store didn’t suggest checking this either just said the phone was under warranty so needed repair. Doh!! (In their defence perhaps they hadn’t thought anyone could be that draft.......

I have been looking into this for a few months now , testing different Bluetooth products I have , for the time being I use my AirPods for calls in the car because there the only Bluetooth headset that work with the watch connected ( also Powerbeats 3 work well ) which makes me think the w1 chip could have something todo with the reason they work well

I have also opened a case with Apple but I got them to review this thread while I was on the phone as some proof that there is an issue , they have already come back to me acknowledging that accept there is an issue with the iPhone X connecting to third partie devices , they told me the issue is third partie Devices haven’t caught up in technologie with the iPhone X yet and they are currently working with manufacturers to come up with a fix

For anyone interested the products I listed with Apple not working correctly were =

jabra bt2048 headset

Bose mini soundlink2

Ford focus 2012

Bmw 1 series 2009

I have had this same problem. The simple solution for me is to reboot the phone. It always clears it up for some amount of time (sometimes hours, sometimes days). One way you can test the call quality before making calls is to use voice memos with the car's microphone. Another thing that I've notice is that the input audio seems to degrade over time.

All that being said I am very disappointed in having to test the audio and potentially reboot my $1000 phone in order to have clear phone calls through my hands-free setup in my car. It is an extreme safety issue to have people fiddling with their phones to get hands-free working while driving and this issue should be looked at immediately.

Same issue here, iPhoneX the sound in the car (Landrover Discovery 5) is perfect but the other end is poor (i am told on most calls) - the bluethooth module and microphone have been replaced in the car but that didn't resolve, so I suspect i ama having the same issue as the folks on this thread - no Apple Watch though, but i do have a Garmin Fenix5 that is connected via BlueTooth permanently, I will try to see how this works by disabling the connection whilst in the car, not ideal !

However I have had a Range Rover Evoke on load this week and the phone has been fine ! confused !

Will watch the thread and update as i find more.

I’m having the same issue in my 2018 Tahoe. I dont Have an Apple Watch so it has nothing to do with the watch. The dealer was going to take the car for the week to try and troubleshoot it and fix it but it seems to be an iPhone X issue not a GM or Bluetooth issue with the vehicle. This is crazy. Spend all this money on a phone and even 6 months later they don’t have a fix for something that could be causing accidents and people to break the law from trying to be hands free in the car. Maybe they’ll address it once they get a lawsuit over it causing an accident from someone having to switch off Bluetooth? Whatever the case I would just love to be able to use my phone in my car via hands free/Bluetooth since that is my office on the go. If anyone figures out a fix please post!!! Thanks!!
