Is an "ASIN" an iMac desktop serial number?
iMac, macOS Sierra (10.12.6), quad-core 6th-gen Skylake 3.3GHz
Who is the seller and/or the company who "refurbished" it? The only certified refurbished devices are refurbished and sold directly by Apple which will be warrantied by Apple. As Kappy said, used devices sold by anyone else would need to be still within the first year since purchase/under the original warranty to qualify for Applecare. What model year is it? If it's not a mid/late 2017, it won't qualify. FWIW, we wouldn't be able to figure out if that is the serial number - they all contain different letters/numbers.

Which was refurbished by Apple, has a one year Apple warranty and is also eligible for AppleCare. That's what 6th Avenue Electronics sells. As soon as he gets it he can enter his serial and confirm.
6Ave sells Apple's new and refurbished over stocked items on eBay and Amazon. The refurbs are Apple refurbs and carry the full Apple warranty. I just bought a new late 2015 iMac from them that I intend to purchase AppleCare for before the original one year warranty runs out.
You can extend the warranty with AppleCare that you can buy anytime within your standard one-year warranty.

As for the warranty: Apple starts its warranty when they ship a product to an authorized reseller; if you buy the unit new, you can get Apple to reset the start date by providing your purchase receipt. As far as I know, the only way to get an Apple warranty on a used product is to purchase it within its first year of warranty.
Unless someone can find something re. a reseller being able to offer Apple certified products with an Apple warranty, my initial response stands - caution is advised. Quite often, resellers will offer their own warranty instead which would be difficult to use as you'd have to pack up and ship the Mac back. Personally, I would not buy from anyone making such claims unless they can provide proof.
I have a new iMac from 6th Ave under warranty and eligible for ApplCare proven by the screen shot.
The OP is buying a refurb, an Apple refurb, from 6th Ave that will be also be under warranty and eligible for AppleCare.

Kappy and Babowa, thank you for your replies. I purchased it from Amazon. Seller name is "6ave". I have not received it yet, should be here in next few days. I was trying to get ahead of the game by buying the extended Apple Care before it arrives. Now, I'm not sure if I should even open up the box, in case I need to return it.
1. Seller's listing says: "(Certified Refurbished)" at the end of the listing title.

This last sentence is interesting - maybe Apple does allow some of their Certified Refurbished products to sold elsewhere?? There is also a statement above the "Warranty & Support" paragraph that says: "Date First Available: December 25, 2016", From your response, this unit is apparently not from the mid to late 2017 period, and perhaps the one year Apple warranty has run out. However, this may be the manufacturing date, and the unit may have been sold NEW sometime in mid to late 2017.
If I can get the serial number for it, I should be able to find out when it was first sold and when the Apple warranty expired(s).
Why would the seller say that it has a "full one-year Apple warranty"? If what you are saying is correct, and I believe it is, then the unit should only have part of a one-year warranty left on it, unless pre-owned units that have been certified by Apple come with a full one-year warranty??

That's interesting - I was told by Apple some time ago that the only certified refurbished items with a warranty were being sold by the Apple online store - nowhere else.
So, do you know when Apple changed their policy or where one may be able to verify?

Just ordered a Certified, Refurbished iMac desktop through Amazon and want to check to see if I can extend Apple warranty. Seller listed an "ASIN" that is 10 digits long and begins with a "B". Is this the serial number?
