MacBook is locked (colored wheel turning) while running First Aid on HD. Tried command/option/escape but no response. Wheels are turning.

That's because it is running first aid on your hard drive. When performing work on the hard drive, especially through the Disk Utility tools, it is not uncommon for a machine to be extremely slow or even unresponsive while it runs through the tools, like first aid. Don't worry, just wait it out.
