CarPlay disconnecting

Hello, Bought a new 2018 BMW 430i and have been having issues from the start with CarPlay using my iPhone X. Continuously disconnects and then reconnects. Usually after about 10 minutes of driving. Has anyone else had this issues and found any resolutions. I’ve been in contact with BMW and they are saying numerous people have been reporting it and it’s an Apple software issue.

iPhone X, iOS 11.2.5

Hey there, Kauff29,

Thanks for bringing your CarPlay issue to the Apple Support Communities. If I'm understanding it,your iPhone X and car are frequently disconnecting and reconnecting, typically after you've started driving for about 10 or so minutes. I'm happy to help!

Based on what you've described, I can recommend the following steps from the "Get help" section of Set up CarPlay with your iPhone - Apple Support :

Get help

If CarPlay doesn't work like you expect, here’s what you can check. After each step, try using CarPlay again.

  1. Make sure that Siri is turned on.
  2. Restart your iPhone and your car. Depending on your car, you might see the CarPlay Home screen when you turn it on. If you don't, look for the CarPlay logo on your car’s display.
  3. If possible, connect your iPhone to a different USB port in your car.
  4. Try a different Lightning to USB cable. Make sure that the cable is certified.
  5. Update to the latest version of iOS.
  6. Check your car’s manual for help. You might need to install firmware updates for your stereo.

Learn more about CarPlay and driving and navigating safely.

Cheers.

Success.... I removed the profile for the car in CarPlay settings, restarted my iPhone and plugged in using a genuine apple cable. CarPlay has been running for about an hour with no hiccups.

May also be worth mentioning, I previously thought that the CarPlay settings page was only for wireless CarPlay however, if you have made a wired connection to a car, a profile will be created in this page.

I may be tempting fate here, but my experience is as follows .

Had car with factory fitted CarPlay for 8 months. Initially connected with a standard white cable but quickly ordered a 20cm black cable because it looked so much better. Constantly troubled by connection dropping out but just plugged it back in again and things were okay until the next time it happened!

So, a couple of weeks ago I went back to using the standard long white cable and using this I experienced no problems. One week ago I bought another short black cable (Syncwire) and so far all is okay, no disconnects.

As I began by saying I hope I’m not tempting fate, but so far so good with a new cable.

I did some troubleshooting for this same problem, which was occurring in my 2019 Subaru Ascent. It happened on both our phones, using both of the USB ports provided, with 6 different cables.

My wife wondered if there was any relationship to Carplay disconnecting, and the cell signal. So, we monitored that, and voila! When the cell signal dropped to 1 bar, Carplay would disconnect. This happened for both ATT and Verizon.

Apple, why would you have Carplay disconnect when the cell signal drops too low? Is it because most of the Carplay functions are related to messaging, calls, and GPS?

Exact same problem. 2018 440 and iPhone X. I’ve had the car for about 6 months now and it has only become an issue in the last week.

iOS 11.4.1. (I’m going to upgrade to 12 tonight in hopes that it fixes the problem)

I never use a cable to connect.

After several minutes into my drive CarPlay begins an endless cycle of disconnecting and reconnecting which interrupts phone calls, navigation, messaging, and media.

Although we have all experienced disconnection problems, the causes seem to differ which makes it difficult to find the causes(s). All I can report is that since using a Syncwire cable I have had no problems. I’m not necessarily saying this would solve others‘ problems as perhaps, the USB socket may be a factor also from vehicle to vehicle.

Also, regarding the signal drop-out theory, this may be true, but going on my experience it is not!

Where I live when I get in my car and pull out on to the road, for the first few hundred metres or so I have no cell signal whatever (although I do in my house!) and cannot receive any internet radio however I can play Apple Music as my iPhone to car connection is still okay. When returning home as I approach my garage the internet radio drops out, however if playing Apple Music this never happens so as regards signal drop-out being a factor, for me this is not the case.

Hi all --

I think it is worth pointing out that, at least for my 2019 Mini Countryman, there is no option of using CarPlay with a wire -- it only works over wireless (Bluetooth). The Mini NAV is mostly the BMW system with a Mini-centric skin on it, so I assume that others in this family of vehicles are in a similar position as myself. I can indeed connect my phone to the car with a wire but it works like a USB connection in a car with a non CarPlay head unit (think Ford Sync) to play music and perform some other functions similar to a standard non-CarPlay Bluetooth Connection. To be clear, the CarPlay specific features are not available in my car with a USB cable, but ONLY when connected wirelessly using Bluetooth.

Since IOS 12 I have noticed less disconnects than previously. It has happened though since the update. I am also thinking its related to the quality of the cellular/LTE signal. It seems when you drop below a certain level, the CarPlay just freaks out and drops the Bluetooth signal (since the update to IOS 12, it seems to reconnect after a delay). I am wondering if this is something internal in how the antennas work? I remember in the past that wifi, cellular and bluetooth had some ability to negatively influence each other, but am not sure of the details.

This morning, I was able to test out Google Maps and while it was a positive experience, it was just barely positive. I had quite a bit of delay, disconnecting and lack of screen responsiveness while using music streaming and Google Maps to navigate. In the past, I have also noticed that Apple Maps seems to have a negative effect on the connection. If I only stream music over CarPlay and use the in dash GPS (which is actually very good) and do not use mapping in CarPlay, I definitely seem to experience less disconnecting. At least Google Maps knows that my street exists and that I am not driving in the woods...

I am using an iPhone 6s for this testing.

I like a lot of others have been troubled by this issue. The problem seems to be caused when your phone auto locks and I found solution by going to settings/Touch id & passcode. Scroll down to allow access when locked and turn the USB devices option to ON. This solved the issue on both my mine and my wife’s phone in both our cars

My 2016 Mustang has been doing this since I updated to ios 11 on my 6s. I have updated my Sync 3 firmware from 2.2 to 3.0 and also updated my phone to ios 12. Carplay will randomly disconnect and often gets stuck in a connect/disconnect cycle that is very annoying. Now it will only connect for a few seconds then nothing. Carplay icon won’t even show up. I’ve tried all of apple’s suggestions without luck.

Hi.

I also drive a Mini Countryman Hybrid, and I keep having trouble with Carplay. Sometimes it doesn't find my iPhone 6, and I have to reconnect through the menu on the touchscreen. I mainly use it to listen to Deezer, and sometimes it will not load my downloaded playlists. Also, when I am driving and want to listen to the radio, it keeps opening apple music, whilst there is no music there. Then I use a shortcut button to go back to the radiostation, and sometimes I have to do that 5 times before I can listen to the radio again.

I get so frustrated, sometimes I don't even get to connect to either the radio nor Deezer, so I'm just driving around in silence.

It's a pity, as this feature is not cheap and I really hoped I would have been able to listen to my music without audiowires.

I hope Apple solves these issues quickly.
