CarPlay disconnecting

Hello, Bought a new 2018 BMW 430i and have been having issues from the start with CarPlay using my iPhone X. Continuously disconnects and then reconnects. Usually after about 10 minutes of driving. Has anyone else had this issues and found any resolutions. I’ve been in contact with BMW and they are saying numerous people have been reporting it and it’s an Apple software issue.

Hey there, Kauff29,

Thanks for bringing your CarPlay issue to the Apple Support Communities. If I'm understanding it,your iPhone X and car are frequently disconnecting and reconnecting, typically after you've started driving for about 10 or so minutes. I'm happy to help!

Based on what you've described, I can recommend the following steps from the "Get help" section of Set up CarPlay with your iPhone - Apple Support :

Get help

If CarPlay doesn't work like you expect, here’s what you can check. After each step, try using CarPlay again.

  1. Make sure that Siri is turned on.
  2. Restart your iPhone and your car. Depending on your car, you might see the CarPlay Home screen when you turn it on. If you don't, look for the CarPlay logo on your car’s display.
  3. If possible, connect your iPhone to a different USB port in your car.
  4. Try a different Lightning to USB cable. Make sure that the cable is certified.
  5. Update to the latest version of iOS.
  6. Check your car’s manual for help. You might need to install firmware updates for your stereo.

Learn more about CarPlay and driving and navigating safely.

Cheers.

Apparently these instructions don’t fix the issue. I don’t understand why Apple continues to give these same instructions year after year. I have an iPhone 8 with iOS 12.1 and have the same issues with CarPlay that people were having over two years ago. The only fix is to unplug your phone and replug in your phone. Then it may work for a while until you need to repeat this. It’s a pain! I could live without using CarPlay if I could run my gps and music through the Bluetooth, but car play won’t let me. So please Apple, fix your software and stop giving useless information on fixes that don’t actually fix anything.

It is an Apple thing, in settings.

Go to Settings -> Screen Time, scroll to the bottom and disable the whole thing. It’s the only way I could get it to stop interfering with CarPlay.

This seems to make sense because it was just after Apple released an update the added Screen Time to the OS, that CarPlay started having this disconnect issue.

Good luck.

Had CarPlay on for 2 hours this morning, no issues (Screen Time off). As a test, disconnected it from the car, turned Screen Time back on, rebooted the phone and turned the car back on, CarPlay connected ok, but disconnected itself after about 5 minutes.

Again, turned off Screen Time, rebooted the phone, connected everything back and no issues after 90 minutes.

Definitely looks like something related to Screen Time, or perhaps even some of the background services supporting Screen Time for my particular “environment”. - iOS, IPhone and car.

Hi,

Given all the problems people are having with CarPlay disconnecting, why is it that there are no responses from Apple Computer other than the standard lightning cable suggestion and other obvious trouble shooting steps. If I knew CarPlay was going to be so unreliable I would have ordered my new car with Nav built in.

Come on Apple, at least tell us you’re working on this problem.

Same issues as others. Problems with dropped connections after 2 minutes over the past 2 years. Some days are worse than others. Changing apps also disconnects it pretty reliably. Happened with iOS 11.x off and on, actually went away with iOS 12.0 this fall, but it’s back worse than ever starting the day I updated to iOS 12.1. I don’t use CarPlay currently because it makes my phone pretty unstable after a few disconnects (like losing cellular on a brand new XS), and I have to restart my phone to get things working correctly again. And yes, like others, I’ve tried all the same BS steps Apple repeatedly says for the past 2 years.

Apple... c’mon!

Own Honda , deleted Honda link - result NO disconnects. It is NOTthe manufactures it is APPLE. They are fixated on updates too many not enough effort to check them out. They will never address problem. Solution is android auto. Stay away from Apple - they are so fixated on profits they really do not give a s... for us. I had Toyota problem that was caused by Apple update! They never fixed it

I have a 2018 BMW M550 that I bought in July 2017. Car Play has never worked well. It works for 30 seconds at the most and disconnects. I have an I Phone 10 running IOS 12.1.2. I have taken the car to the dealer 5 times just for this issue and they said it is an apple issue and can't do anything more. I have called Apple and they blame BMW. Meanwhile I can't really use my phone while driving. It is beyond ridiculous. I have zero issues with this in my 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee but BMW tells me that is because their connection is wired and BMW is the only wireless Car Play company. That is great but it doesn't work and no one knows why.

Hi

having exactly the same problem with Citroen Dispatch Van 2016 plate.

all was working fine til a few weeks ago.

turning off screen time helped for a while but today it keeps disconnecting even though it’s off.

ive tried different cables as well.

the only way I can get it to not disconnect is by having the phone in flight mode.

this is so annoying!

Just to add to this story, I am having the problem with random frequent disconnects also. I have duplicated the problem with 3 different iPhone models (6S, 7, and 8) in 2 different vehicles (Subaru Outback 2018, Subaru Impreza 2019) with multiple different Apple-brand lightning cables. I have factory reset the audio/navigation head in the cars. I have factory wiped and reset one of the iPhones (the iPhone 8). All iPhones running iOS 12.1.2. Disconnects occur regardless of what apps are active on the iPhone or in CarPlay. Sometimes CarPlay crashes with no apps active.

My symptoms seem unlikely to be a hardware problem in the phone (3 different phones) or cars (2 different cars).

Incidentally, I bought an Android phone just to see if it worked with Android Auto and Google Maps. It works fine.
