CarPlay disconnecting

Hello, Bought a new 2018 BMW 430i and have been having issues from the start with CarPlay using my iPhone X. Continuously disconnects and then reconnects. Usually after about 10 minutes of driving. Has anyone else had this issues and found any resolutions. I’ve been in contact with BMW and they are saying numerous people have been reporting it and it’s an Apple software issue.

iPhone X, iOS 11.2.5

Hey there, Kauff29,

Thanks for bringing your CarPlay issue to the Apple Support Communities. If I'm understanding it,your iPhone X and car are frequently disconnecting and reconnecting, typically after you've started driving for about 10 or so minutes. I'm happy to help!

Based on what you've described, I can recommend the following steps from the "Get help" section of Set up CarPlay with your iPhone - Apple Support :

Get help

If CarPlay doesn't work like you expect, here’s what you can check. After each step, try using CarPlay again.

  1. Make sure that Siri is turned on.
  2. Restart your iPhone and your car. Depending on your car, you might see the CarPlay Home screen when you turn it on. If you don't, look for the CarPlay logo on your car’s display.
  3. If possible, connect your iPhone to a different USB port in your car.
  4. Try a different Lightning to USB cable. Make sure that the cable is certified.
  5. Update to the latest version of iOS.
  6. Check your car’s manual for help. You might need to install firmware updates for your stereo.

Learn more about CarPlay and driving and navigating safely.

Cheers.

Same disconnects here using iPhone 8plus and two XS Maxs w/ 12.1.1 on 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport LE. Mitsubishi replaced the unit, USB and all cabling behind the dash. Used several USB cables, renamed phones to exclude special characters and spaces, hard restarts, removed Mitsubishi profile in Car Play settings to reestablish. Sending logs to Apple now.

I have a 2018 Subaru Impreza and since I got the car I’ve used 4 different cables and even the wireless CarPlay and after 40 minutes it completely shuts off and then my car connects to the phone via Bluetooth unless I unplug the phone from the cable and reconnect it. Doesn’t seem conducive to hands free driving if I have to fumble with my phone every 40 minutes

I have the exact same problem with my 2018 BMW M550I and an I Phone X. I have taken my car to the dealer 6 times and they blame Apple and basically have given up. I have called Apple and they say it is a BMW problem. Meanwhile I can't even use my phone when I drive my car and doing so as you pointed out is extremely dangerous. This is beyond ridiculous!

I posed this ...

I think I found the problem with the disconnect in CarPlay.

I have a KIA 2018 Stinger GT2. I have Had this problem for 4 months.

Are you ready .... Apple (iPhone) MAPS has been causing the issue.

I stumbled across it when I turned off the Radio and closed the apps on my iPhone.

Apple Maps popped up on my Radio. (Not the Nav that comes with the Radio) It was running. I didn't open it or use it! it must have been running in the back round using resources. I deleted the App from my iPhone. Thank god (Apple), lol allowed users to uninstall there apps.

Once I did that I rebooted the iPhone connected back using the same Lightning Cable and proceeded to see if every thing was still functioning, it was, then I took a drive. Everything is working perfectly. Even all the information for Waze, SiriusXM and other music providers are working great.

Been working with no issues for about 10 days straight. WOW, what a relief.

Funny thing though, every once and a while a little window comes up and reads "Apple maps needs to be installed. go to the apps store". LOL.

I finally stopped using the Audi cable which came with my car and it's way better. Car play still seems to disconnect but waaaay less frequently. For example, i was out an about boston and the burbs yesterday for about 2.5 hours of driving and it only disconnected 1 time. been using this cable for about a week now. i'm far less frustrated now - thanks to various folks in this group who suggested trying this fix. happy for now....2017 Audi A4 Carplay user.

Changed cable with a Apple certified cable, same results.

This problem is extremely intermittent.

Personally, I think this is low on your priority list. Apple (you) seems to think this problem can wait, not true.

More and more Cars, trucks and even high-end Motorcycles are having CarPlay with Apple and Android abilities.

Along with your declining Stock prices and and underestimating Android you will loose a bigger market share.

You need to look at the bigger picture before you loose more users.

You are correct. the problem is only a software issue related to Apple. I used CarPlay before without any issues, but after changing to a new iPhone Xs I cannot use it anymore. The cable is the same and work great with my wife and daughters iphone, but for me it keeps disconnecting specially if I try to select another song in the phone.

So, for me, people saying to change cables, etc, doesn't make any sense. sometimes something else is changed and that's way they believe it's better.

Apple really don't care about us having this issue. too sad!!!

I have done everything humanly possible. even had the Radio changed out.

Same issues. I have been going thru this since Waze came on board.

I have installed and uninstalled Apps, WiFi on and off, etc.

I think it's something in the iOS 12.x resources running while CarPlay is active. I have even turned off all the Notifications. no change. I'm on the Test team. I have reported numerous Bug Reports. They have fixed some of the Bugs.

Nothing with CarPlay issues.

Has anybody had any issues with Android running on CarPlay ?

Everything points to this being an Apple software issue. While some have found success jiggling the cord, removing an app, turning some system thingy on or off, etc., others clearly have found no solutions despite attempting the suggested solutions. I hope folks continue posting their solutions in the event they are helpful to someone else, but chances are there is no universal solution until Apple directly addresses it. IMO this is akin to all the reported bugs after any software/hardware release -- some have better battery life, some have worse, some phones crash, some claim it's the best update ever. So I can understand a transient glitch with CarPlay despite the inconvenience to me. What I can't understand is Apple allowing this to fester for 2-3 years now.

I deleted Google Maps yesterday, and so far so good (insert conspiracy theory here), but I'm certainly not holding my breath...

One other thought. Whereas it is easy to think of this an Apple problem because it is occurring across multiple vehicle models, it might be useful to hear from others experiencing the problem with the name of the manufacturer of the navigation head in your car. This might help narrow down the source of the problem to some sort of interaction between the Apple device / software and the navigation head hardware and software.

For example, on the two Subaru vehicles I have (Outback and Impreza), the navigation head is made by Harmon Kardon. The connection method is through a Apple certified Lightning cable.

Very specific— In my 2018 Camry xle hybrid iPhone 7+had connection problems with certified cord. When I purchased galaxy - no problems. All started one month after obtaining car when an apple update 12.1 destroyed connection . IT IS AN apple issue they are unable or unwilling to fix!!! Toyota’s unwillingness to update their 2018 model is also to blame. So I now use a Honda Accord with no problems
