CarPlay disconnecting

Hello, Bought a new 2018 BMW 430i and have been having issues from the start with CarPlay using my iPhone X. Continuously disconnects and then reconnects. Usually after about 10 minutes of driving. Has anyone else had this issues and found any resolutions. I’ve been in contact with BMW and they are saying numerous people have been reporting it and it’s an Apple software issue.

iPhone X, iOS 11.2.5

Hey there, Kauff29,

Thanks for bringing your CarPlay issue to the Apple Support Communities. If I'm understanding it,your iPhone X and car are frequently disconnecting and reconnecting, typically after you've started driving for about 10 or so minutes. I'm happy to help!

Based on what you've described, I can recommend the following steps from the "Get help" section of Set up CarPlay with your iPhone - Apple Support :

Get help

If CarPlay doesn't work like you expect, here’s what you can check. After each step, try using CarPlay again.

  1. Make sure that Siri is turned on.
  2. Restart your iPhone and your car. Depending on your car, you might see the CarPlay Home screen when you turn it on. If you don't, look for the CarPlay logo on your car’s display.
  3. If possible, connect your iPhone to a different USB port in your car.
  4. Try a different Lightning to USB cable. Make sure that the cable is certified.
  5. Update to the latest version of iOS.
  6. Check your car’s manual for help. You might need to install firmware updates for your stereo.

Learn more about CarPlay and driving and navigating safely.

Cheers.

I have the same problem using iPhone X's and BMW 330e. After digging into it it seems that the car's WiFi is the culprit. What seems to to the trick is when reconnecting you should disable and enable Vehicle WiFi (uncheck and check) at the idrive menu at manage mobile devices -> settings. Then quickly to to your iPhone, disable WiFi and turn it on again. You'll see BMWxxxCarplay. Connect to it and then go to idrive in your car choose manage mobile devices check your iPhone and select apple car play. This will last for your journey. The problem with me that I have to repeat this almost every trip. I guess it's either a software defect of the head unit or a faulty WiFi antenna. Theater could be replaced. You can Google it.

After struggling I gave up my 2018 Toyota and now have a Honda Accord. Everything works perfectly! Car play and all work perfectly. I also use an Apple Xr. The only conclusion I can offer the struggle is caused by the vehicle and manufacturers not producing a fault free product. When the manufactures invest and correct problems, then we will have successful connections

2018 Jeep Wrangler JLU purchased in Feb 2018 ... CarPlay disconnects randomly but it seems like it may have something to do with notifications coming to the phone. It sometimes disconnects and then immediately reconnects, other times it stays disconnected and it won’t reconnect unless I turn the car off and then back on. I’m using an iPhone X. Using the cars media player input and not using CarPlay it never disconnects.

SobeHall, with regards to "this is a Apple issue and many people have spent a lot of time fighting with their car manufacturers for no reason." - it is likely that Apple plays a role in solving this problem that affects so many different makes and models of vehicles. However, I purchased a vehicle from a manufacturer that claimed their car was CarPlay compatible. So, I would expect the manufacturer would be working closely with Apple to resolve my problem instead of telling me it is an Apple problem and for me to work it out with Apple.

After weeks with no issues the disconnecting returned. I noticed it happening when Apple maps pushes a notification "XXX minutes to your home address" message, another person had mentioned uninstalling Apple Maps was the solution for them.

I went to

Settings > Maps

Set "Location" to Never

Siri & Search to Off

Notifications to Off

Show Parked Location to Off

Turned off Cellular Data

It's been a few days with no disconnects after doing that.

Because others have asked when I do have disconnect issues if I put my phone in airplane mode the disconnecting stops.

I'm not sure if this will be any help at all, but I previously posted about my 3 month old Subaru Impreza having the disconnect among other issues with the CarPlay. Took it to the dealer today, had a software update done, and it seems to be working now like it should. I'm knocking on wood as I type, but so far so good after an hour of being connected. Before the update, this morning it disconnected 3x in 10 minutes.

While I agree but not fully agree, my point here is that I’ve had my new vehicle for almost a year and the manufacturer cannot figure out what is wrong, as others have stated they’ve gone as far as replacing the whole unit with no improvement. Others have resolved the issue by uninstalling certain apps on their phones. (Essentially not being allowed to use your device as advertised) ... CarPlay is Apple, the iPhone is Apple, without CarPlay, if my phone didn’t work in my car I wouldn’t expect my car manufacturer to fix the issue but instead my phone manufacturer. Apple has known about this issue since at least 2015 and it’s still not fixed ... the only things having issues are the Apple products ...

2019 BMW X3 / iPhone X owner here.

Same story as many of you, constant CarPlay disconnects. Set it to standard Bluetooth (BMW iDrive in the menu) and the connection stays solid.

Reached out to my BMW dealer and sure enough, others have reported the same thing.

Has Apple ever acknowledged that this is an actual issue? Seems this is far from an isolated problem given the significant number of forum threads that can be found out there about this......

I've reported my frequent disconnect issues previously on this thread. Last night, CarPlay disconnected during a phone call, and I just finished the call on the handset and hung up. Then my 2018 Audi Q5 MMI would not play any audio. Anytime I adjusted the volume, it popped up the graphic for adjusting the volume of the "phone call." In other words, the head unit continued to think a phone was attached to it and actively making a call, even though the phone was disconnected (no cord, no bluetooth), I had restarted the phone, and obviously CarPlay was not active on the MMI (head unit). I had to reattach my iPhone XS and make a call and then hang up to "reset" the MMI to release the phone call.

The reason I mention this is that events occurring with CarPlay during the disconnect persisted on the MMI, whether the iPhone was attached or not. Clearly, with all the reports of issues coming and going in association with iOS updates, the iPhone software is playing a role. But now I increasingly wonder if the CarPlay app (installed on Audi, BMW, Subaru, etc head units) has its own stability issues. As such, version "X" of CarPlay on vehicle "Y" may be a bad combination with an iPhone with iOS "Z."

Hopefully that made sense. And it may explain why some solutions work for some folks and not for others... because there's 2 versions of software and 2 kinds of hardware in play. As I've tried everything on my phone that others have suggested, I'll see if my dealer is willing to update the software.

Thanks all...

I am having the same issues. I have a iPhone 7 Plus and a kenwood DDX9017DABS in my car so that I can have CarPlay. After performing Apple update the Phone will disconnect after 10seconds or less and won’t connect again.

It might reconnect if I reset the audio system but disconnects again shortly after.

I have even bought a new cable to see if that works. Didn’t make a difference.

Tried all the settings changes that are explained when searching for an answer. That didn’t make a difference.

Apple please update iOS to resolve this issue. I wanted Apple CarPlay to make my driving habits safer, I am finding myself looking at the screen a lot more to try and resolve the problem.
