I want to set up apple music family plan. after I send out the invites and they join, if they already were purchasing apple music, will their individual billing accounts automatically stop or will they have to cancel it?

They shouldn't but I would advise that they accept the sign up for the Apple Music first, then cancel their individual plans after. That way, they can give it some time to make sure everything is running smoothly and transferred over.

They will need to cancel their individual plans that they were subscribed to.
