Dear Apple, I didn’t know you were in charge of US holidays!?

************

I see you’ve chosen to omit Easter and all holidays relating to Easter.

I guess I was just uninformed that Apple was now officially in charge of the United States Holidays.

Make sure you update the government please because it seems they still are under the impression Easter is a national holiday...when CLEARLY it Shows in iPhone calendars that it’s not. I mean I have “U.S holidays” checked. But my calendar isn’t showing Easter... so obviously that means you guys get to dictate what we celebrate now.

Federal holidays apply only to Federal employees. They carry no official weight beyond that.

I was merely wanting to find out how to remove holidays, Muslim or otherwise, that don’t concern or pertain to me.

You cannot edit the calendar. You will need to subscribe to a different holiday calendar. You'll find lots of them here:

They have lots of calendars and instructions on how to use them.

You know what? You are correct. At no time did you ask how to remove other holidays because they offended you. You just wanted to know how to do so.

It's been a quick reaction of long-time members (including myself) here in this, and other similar topics to assume the user is being a jerk. That because up until your question, every single one has been. This topic has had numerous posts removed by people who made it quite clear they were prejudiced.

The simple answer is, as you've seen, to turn off Apple's default calendar and either subscribe to one that suites your needs, or create your own.

As an aside, no, there are no Federal holidays. Not in the sense that every person in the U.S. is included. Such as this list, the days off pertain only to federal employees. Basically, that list is the same as if you worked at 3M, Target or wherever, and they hand their employees a list of which calendar days will be paid time off. That list pertains to no one other than the employees of that business.

Easter is not an official US holiday. In countries where it is, Easter still appears on Calendar. Apple isn't in charge of US holidays but they do get to decide about the calendar layout for this non-denominational country. Apple doesn't say why they removed it so we know no official answer and are not allowed to speculate on this site. It does, however, reflect a removal of any bias towards any particular religion and leaves people the freedom to select which events they wish to have displayed. You can too:

You can find a list of all US Federal Holidays here - What are Federal holidays? - OPM.gov

Yesterday, Apple started updating their iOS calendar so things such as Easter, Good Friday, etc. will start showing up. They weren't there yesterday but they started showing up this morning. Congratulations for all of you that complained that Easter wasn't showing up and we all get to have Christian, Islam, Jewish and other "holidays" on our calendars. Also, on Oct 8 we get two separate holidays - Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples' Day. As far as I can tell these all showed up overnight for 2018:

  • Lunar New Year - Feb 15
  • Holi - Mar 2
  • Palm Sunday - Mar 25
  • Good Friday - Mar 30
  • Passover - Mar 31
  • Cinco de Mayo - May 5
  • First Day of Ramadan - May 15
  • Orthodox Easter - Apr 8
  • Earth Day - Apr 22
  • Eid-al-Fitr - Jun 15
  • Juneteenth - Jun 19
  • Eid al-Adha - Aug 20
  • Rosh Hashanah - Sep 10
  • Yom Kippur - Sep 19
  • Ashura - Sep 20
  • Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples' Day - Oct 8
  • Diwali - Nov 7
  • Hanukkah - Dec 3
  • Kwanzaa - Dec 26

Idk, I have my calendar set to show all calendars and Easter is showing up on mine. Along with Good Friday and Passover.

That's because Apple updated the US Holidays subscription calendar on February 23* to include the religious holidays of the 5 religions most widely practiced in the US.

*Note that the original post was on February 22

No Easter, but they do have Ramadan and other Muslim holidays, and Jewish holidays. Google is just as bad, they have a service to show where to face Mecca Qibla Finder. I didn't know Google was into specifically servicing one religious group.

Very strange. EASTER is on my Apple US Holidays calendar. As is Good Friday. Orthodox (Easter Rite) Easter is there also. I think you are reading from some racist website that is spewing lies and not checking for yourself. It's been posted before, but if you don't read the threads you post to you miss a lot. These are the religions whose holidays are listed:

  • Roman-based Christian
  • Easter Rite Christian
  • Jewish
  • Hindu
  • Muslim

Not by coincidence, these are the 5 most widely practiced religions in the United States. There are members of Congress that are represented by all of these. As well as millions of other US Citizens who practice them.

I don’t think the Muslim holidays are official US holidays either are they

As there is no such thing as an "official U.S. Holiday", technically, you're correct. Christmas, Easter, Mother's Day, Labor Day, they're also not official U.S. Holidays. However, like Muslim holidays, Jewish holidays, Hindu holidays, they ARE holidays celebrated by official U.S. Citizens.

If you look at earlier info in the press you’ll find they removed Easter and Good Friday from the calendar earlier in the year and then have quietly added them back in. It would be nice if Apple would address this openly rather than the way it has been handled. Everybody is entitled to mistakes, failing to acknowledge them is what concerns me. I value transparency and honesty in the companies I buy from, I find this disappointing.
