Equations in Pages

Why does entering an equation into Pages have to be so hard and confusing? Why can't it be as easy as MS Word Equation Editor?

That is a rhetorical question that you should put to Apple from the Pages menu's Provide Pages Feedback menu item.

Your options for equations in Pages are knowledge of LaTeX or Math ML syntax, or using Design Science's MathType application that integates with Pages via a checkbox in Pages Preferences : General (v6.3.1), and the Insert menu : Equations… MathType has a 30 day trial upon expiration, the product becomes MathType Lite, and continues to work with fewer features. Design Sciences were the developers of the Microsoft Equation Editor.

Beyond these two paragraphs, just use Word, or LibreOffice Writer, each with its own equation editor.
