iCloud backup size "0 KB"-- what does this mean?

I have an iPad and am suddenly not sure the iCloud backups are any good.

Maybe 6 months ago I recall checking and seeing something reasonable for the iCloud backups for this device. But I just checked on them like this:

iPad > Settings > (User name) > iCloud > STORAGE: iCloud > Manage Storage > BACKUPS

This lists "0 KB".

Then it lists the iPad specifically ("This iPad") and this also says "0 KB". Under this it says "Backup Size Zero KB". Peculiarly, it does seem to find new things to back up under "Next Backup Size". If I find the "Backup Now" button and do it, the iPad does appear to be doing something and backing up. But coming back to check, the result is still the same-- the total backup size is "0 KB", even after doing a new backup.

Peculiarly, there is *something* under backups in there, because the bar graph, the one at:

iPad > Settings > (User name) > iCloud > STORAGE: iCloud

... does show a small amount of our iCloud space used by "Backup" (yellow bar).

In other symptoms, if I log in on iCloud, I don't see the iPad under "My Devices".

I can't tell if I have a valid backup or not. It could be that the "Zero KB" / "0 KB" indicators are incorrect and there really is a valid backup. (But of course I can't count on that-- I wouldn't want to depend on this backup and try to restore from it and find it to be corrupt.)

What's going on in this situation? Is this "Zero KB" / "0 KB" symptom common? I haven't found any threads in a fair bit of googling that appear to be the same as the situation I'm seeing.

I should clarify, both devices claim to be backing up, and do list most recent backup times. When I trigger a backup manually, it appears something is being done (it doesn't say the backup failed or anything). But in both cases the final backup size is "0 bytes", "0 KB", or "Zero KB", depending on which menu I'm looking at.

Now, it's entirely possible that these actually are valid backups. But I don't see how anyone could be expected to trust the integrity of a backup that looks like this. I'd check the contents of each of these backups and see specifically what's in them, but of course there's no way to do that. Without being able to do that, no reasonable and attentive person could be expected to believe these backups are good and would be ready to use if needed.

Am I missing something here? Has this been the case for months and I just never noticed until now?

(PS, I'd go make an iTunes backup and rest assured that I had that backup as well. While I do have this on the iPhone, I've never backed up the iPad to iTunes before. In fact, it's the attempt to do a first iTunes backup-- which as I understand it has a low but nonzero chance of wiping the entire iPad in the process of backing it up-- that led me to find this problem. I wanted to make sure the iCloud backup of the iPad is good, so that I could rest assured I had some backup if the iPad was wiped by backing it up to iTunes, I could restore from iCloud, but I don't see that I can count on a "0 KB" backup as a fallback. Things are starting to feel borderline Orwellian.)

You indicated that it did show that the backup was showing as 1.8GB on your Mac, so I would say that it is there, and regardless of what is showing on your device, it will show it in the list for you to select from. But again, just to play it safe, I would strongly recommend that you create an iTunes backup before you try to restore from the iCloud backup, just to CYA. Then, the worst that would happen is that you would either restore from an iCloud backup from, say, 2 days ago, or, you would have the option to restore to exactly where you were at the beginning of the process.

Best of luck,
