No blue dot for unread incoming mail

I'm no longer getting blue 'unread' dots beside incoming messages in Apple Mail 11.2 on my 2016 MacBook. The dots are there in my iOS 11.2.6 mail. I don't see any setting to turn this off or on in Mail's Preferences. Under 'Viewing', there is a setting to show unread messages in bold font, but selecting and deselecting it doesn't change the font. I'm sure the blue dot is supposed to work by default, and it was working as it should until recently. Are other people experiencing this? Is there a fix?

This bug is driving me bonkers. I cannot figure out how to fix it. I am missing a lot of mail because there is no way to tell what is new. My other machines (also running 10.13.2) display the new mail as they should (bold with blue dot), but for some unknown reason my primary machine has this annoying issue.

I should also mention that this only happens with my primary mail account...other accounts with same host, as well as google mail work display new messages in bold with blue dot.

Do you guys have any suggestion so on how to fix this?

My prefs are set to display new mail in bold, but it doesn't work. I also rebuilt my mailbox. I really rather not throw away my pref and start again. I read about others with this problem and after throwing away prefs the problem still existed.

Any helps / suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
