fontworker and fontd processes using 90% CPU

There are two processes (fontworker and fontd) that are using 90% or more of my CPU processing power. My iMac system (27-inch, Late 2012) is running VERY slow. Why is this? How can I stop these processing from using all my CPU? I am running Mac OS High Sierra (ver 10.13.3) on a 2.9GHz Intel Core i5 with 8GB of memory.

Any insight/assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Kind regards,

Bob

Hello and welcome to Apple Support Communities hitz1,

I see that your iMac is running slowly and you're seeing two processes using a lot of processing power. I can understand your concern, and I'd be happy to provide some information to try to help.

Let's have you take a look at this article that will walk you through how to quit any processes that are not working properly:

See how apps affect Mac performance, battery runtime, temperature, and fan activity
Take a look at the section titled "Quit any malfunctioning processes".
