Buying 2nd hand iphone

Hi, I’m considering buying a 2nd hand iphone, but in dilemma whether should I go for it or not.


Say, I buy an iphone from someone who has 12/24 months contract with EE/Three or any other network. When I bought the iPhone it was in a sealed pack & wasn’t activated, so I logged in with my apple ID. What happens if after few months the user make insurance claim stating he lost his iphone or if he doesn’t pay for his contract and the network provider tries to lock the iphone? Am I screwed then ?

Yes. If they default and the carrier blacklists it, you may find your phone doesn’t work. In such a case, at least in the USA with our universal national blacklisting service, that phone would then be useless with any US, Canadian or Mexican network. And you’d be unable to get it de-listed since it is indeed technically a stolen device.


Why you’d even consider buying such a device is beyond me. Clearly, the seller is not dealing honestly if they have not cleared their own debt with the provider. Until they do, that phone is legally not theirs to sell.
