I don't believe that a coaster would harm the sound quality of the device at all, since the sound doesn't really come out of the bottom anyway. I'm glad you're interested in a HomePod! They're neat little devices—and they'll only get better with AirPlay 2!

Hey, everyone! I am seriously considering purchasing a HomePod! However, the majority of my room is black wooden surfaces, particularly my desk where I would most likely place the HomePod near my other Apple devices! Would a coaster distort the sound of the HomePod? I fear that the white rings may be an issue! As a side note, how is everyone enjoying the HomePod for those that have it? I’ve read that the sound quality is exceptional! Thanks!

Yes a coaster or a piece of cloth or something else would not distort the sound.
I have my HomePod on a glass table with a coaster / mat underneath. No issues with sound loss or hearing external noises from vibration—even when it is on top volume. Highly recommend!
