New e-mails arriving in my inbox are shown as read even though I haven't read them.

I've had this problem for a while now, but as my contact network increases, managing my e-mails is becoming a bit of problem.

My MacBook Pro is running Mac OS High Sierra.

I would just like to have a normal functioning e-mail inbox where new e-mails stay marked as unread until I choose to read them. I've changed the view/layout options, but without success.

I know I can create mailbox rules and have incoming mails delivered to specific folders. Been there, done that but that doesn't guarantee showing a new e-mail to that specific folder is unread.

Grateful for some input.
