FCPX 10.4 on Sierra 10.12.6 beachball

I updated my FCPX without thinking it through.

I had to update a few libraries for quick projects.

I am done with the edits but it was difficult.

I had to reinstall plugins for the first project and the playback would stutter and beachball some of the time.

The second project was a nightmare. I could never playback the project. I made proxies and I optimized my footage. I had to use the frame by frame tap to get through the edits.

I need help fixing this issue very soon.

I haven't had to trouble shoot my edit system since 2007 on OS9.

I am on a iMac (Retina 5K, 27inch, Late 2014) 4Ghz intel Core i7, 8Gb memory 1600 MHz DDR3, AMD Radeon R9 M295X 4096 MB

FCPX 10.4

I tried resetting the software preferences. It helped but it did not get rid of my playback and the beachball.

I tried another user login.

I have not reinstalled or done a clean install because I don't know how to do it. I will google it if it comes to that.

I even downloaded ETRECHECK but I had not idea what I was looking at.

Do I run it to check beach balling or apps crashing?

Any help is appreciated.

Final Cut Pro X, macOS Sierra (10.12.6), iMac, OS 10.12.6, 2.8GHz intel Core

I have perged preferences

emptied cache

FCPX 10.4 is totally wrecked - I cannot share (export) I cannot see the time line because it stops playing.

It takes an hour to export a 2:40 timeline. This is insane!

I cannot get it to work at all.

Do I need to update to High Sierra ? I hear people are having the exact issue with no resolution.

I have a saved version of fcpx 10.2.3

I have converted two of my libraries to 10.4 --

What a nightmare!

Your system is a mess.

It looks like it has been getting update over update for many years - probably migrating from an older mac, as there is software targetting Tiger ⚠ (that is Mac OS X 10.4...)

At this point the best course of action is to make a full clone, then erase the system drive, do a clean installation of Sierra, or High Sierra, and migrate only the user accounts. You do not want to migrate stuff like seagate software that is not only unnecessary but woefully archaic; you should not be running the intego stuff; and more.

Mar 15, 2018 4:38 PM in response to Nickyindurham

I am still having dates beach ball during editing.

I have reinstalled Sierra after a backup and wiping the HD and restoring from the new download of Sierra.

Not sure what my next step should be.

I am still using 10.12.6

FCPX 10.4

I cannot play the timeline because it beach balls. It takes 20 minutes to export a 2 minute project. This is making me insane. After this project I have to get the system working.

Mar 20, 2018 12:12 PM in response to Luis Sequeira1

I have my FCPXX library files on a thunderbolt RAID

The RAID external drives have been at this capacity for two years. I archive projects and libraries as I go. It has not caused beach balling on my project timelines. But who knows maybe the planets are in alignment for slowing down the drive. although, I am getting a warning on my Promise Pegasus utility

"Command times out on physical disk" when I export the 2:30minute project. It is taking nearly 20 minutes to "share" to my local HDD.

I am not sure I did the migration correctly since I had a hard time finding anything on google that made sense to me.

I am resigned to wiping out my account and all my files and starting over but I really don't want to do that.

I have had success with the process.

I am not having the 8 minute boot up that was happening before the issue.

I think my RAID was causing some errors and slowing things up.

I replaced a HDD and then rebuilt my RAID.

My FCPX is working great and my iMac is booting fast.

Thanks for the suggestions. I was able to stumble through the process and have success. I dislike being my own IT, which is why I own an Apple.

FCPX 10.4 on Sierra 10.12.6 beachball
