I am trying to use an older Airport Extreme with Time Capsule on a Google wi-fi router. It has worked on two MacBook Pros but I can't get it to work with a MacBook Air (High Sierra v.10.13.3). I cannot see the drive in Finder to connect and set up with Time Machine.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Reset the airport to factory and start over. It definitely should show the network tab.. and it is generally easier to configure it in situ and wired correctly.. so use ethernet from WAN port of the Extreme to the main router.
This is still not a great setup and the speed is likely to be terrible.

In one of your other computers that does work.. or iphone or ipad with the iOS version of the airport utility.. just click (tap) the icon of the airport.
You will see its IP address.
And what I suggested was to set static IP.. so instead of the Airport continually changing IP as will happen with the setup on DHCP.. just change over to Static in the Airport. Basically you can use the exact IP .. subnet mask.. router address and DNS as it has now..
DNS however can be a bit tricky.. you should list the main google router first.. which is probably 192.168.1.1 or something like that.. as a secondary DNS you can use google public values like 8.8.8.8
Even better is to set the IP statically via the main router DHCP reservations.. but you will need to look up the manual for that one.
You are using an Airport Extreme.. Not a Time Capsule.. which is completely different.. but I guess with a USB hard disk plugged into it and shared to the network?
What OS do your MBPs use? Are they connected by wireless (ethernet??) directly to the Extreme..??
If so that is why they work
You need to HELP high Sierra with everything to do with Networks..
First off, are you running 3rd party AV or security software on the Mac? That will mess things up right proper.. !!
You need to turn them off.
You also need IPv6 set correctly.. not auto .. change it to Link-Local Only. Unless you are using a fully IPv6 integrated network. (very unlikely).
Once you sort the above.. if the Extreme still does not appear.. manually connect to it using Go /Connect to server in the Finder top menu.
Type in the address to the Extreme directly..
afp://10.0.1.1 (replace IP with actual Extreme IP which should be set statically to ensure this continues to work).
Once the Mac discovers the resource it will ask for password.. provide the password and save to your keychain.. Don't forget otherwise you will need to keep putting in your password.. well you probably have to do that anyway because of increased security in HS.
Tell us how that goes.
One other tiny bit of clarification.. The drive plugged into Airport is now and forevermore a network drive.. External drive means something plugged in by USB or FireWire or Thunderbolt. The disk is directly accessed by the computer. For anything you connect to by ethernet or wifi.. it is network drive.. and you do not directly connect.. rather you share the resource to the network.

My wifi network is run on a Google wifi router and I have plugged an Airport Extreme (with Time Capsule) into the router. I use it only as a network drive (thanks for correcting my terminology) and use the Time Machine app to back up.
My AirBook and MBPs are all using macOS High Sierra version 10.13.3 (17D102). Everything is connected via wifi, not ethernet. I have set IPv6 to Link-Local Only. Unfortunately I cannot see the network drive in Finder. Is there a way to find the correct IP address so I can connect?
You have it connected by wireless if you managed that.. I am amazed.. highly amazed.
Your extreme must be very old.. as it was removed from later airport utility.. so perhaps you are even using older utility. What model is it exactly and what version airport utility are you running??
Your extreme MUST be plugged into the main router by ethernet.. it must be in bridge mode.. and you should have wireless OFF.
Yes, it is pretty old. According to the AirPort Utility app it is 4th it is either the first or second generation. I do have it connected to the router via ethernet.
I'm not sure how to put it into Bridge Mode.
The options for Wi-Fi Mode are: Create Network (I know that's wrong), Join Another Network, Extend a network, or Off.
Turn wifi to OFF.
Bridge mode.. select bridge as option in the Network tab.
Well, I thought I understood things but now... I do not see a Network tab in my AirPort Utility.
Can I ask a pretty basic question? When I set up the AirPort I set it up to "join another network" and then set it up to join the Google wifi network. Is that the correct way?
