Getting faster networking speeds?

I have a bunch of external drives plugged into my iMac and I access the data over my home network on my Macbook Pro and iPad. I'm currently using an Extreme AC and when I got it I purchased specific ethernet cables to connect to my modem for faster speeds, though I do not remember what they are...

1. What can I do to achieve faster transfer speeds when transfer or viewing files between my devices?

2. What speed of ethernet cable should I have connected to my router?

3. Are there any 3rd party modems out there that will get me faster speeds then the Extreme?

Almost any ethernet cables you purchase in the last 15 years would be Cat5E or more recently Cat6 and they will both handle gigabit just fine.

The speed of your modem is irrelevant.. as long as both the iMac and the MBP or iPad are connected to the Airport.

And no.. the latest AC airport is as fast as the client will go... so there is no change there.

Speeds for transfer will be very slow if both the iMac and MBP use wireless.

One or both should use ethernet. Of course you have no choice with the iPad so at the very least make sure the iMac is plugged into the airport and wireless is turned off (or second on the list of connections.. with ethernet on top).
