Sent items disappeared in Mail

The sent items in my sent items folder on my Mac and iPad Mini has just vanished - does anyone know where they have gone? New sent items since are still showing up in both. On iCloud only 2 devices connected.

Mac Pro, macOS High Sierra (10.13.3)

RECOVER A DELETED MAILBOX CONTENTS Besides the Sent mailbox, another Sent mail box appeared in my Icloud section on my desktop computer. I thought this to be strange. Why are there two Sent mailboxes? So I deleted the new gray one. All of my sent mail has now disappeared, including from both the regular Sent mailbox. How can that be restored???
