Performance issues with macbook pro 15'' early 2011

Hi guys, hope you can help. I've recently upgraded and reintalled everything fresh on my mac, even replaced the motherboard a few years ago mind you but upgraded to 10 gigs of ram yesterday. And I'm finding my mac act still very sluggish.

Here is a report from EtreCheck, I hope it makes sense to a pro out there. I'm wondering if my logic board isn't just too old now, the computer runs ok, but with 10 gigs of ram an SSD drive it should be running more than that. All check seems to be pointing towards an issue with my CPU being overly used.

EtreCheck version: 4.1 (4A162)

Report generated: 2018-03-05 18:48:06

Download EtreCheck from https://etrecheck.com

You installed not one but two unsupported system modifications: RAM exceeding that Mac's specifications as well an aftermarket SSD. Unsupported hardware modifications will result in unexpected results. Fix them by reverting its hardware to a supported configuration.

The only SSDs I have used and can recommend in that model Mac are sold by OWC / MacSales. The Samsung "EVO" series do not enjoy a good reputation among Mac users. Complaints are common and typically arise upon macOS upgrades or updates, whereas complaints regarding OWC's Mercury Extreme Pro 6G models are literally unheard of.

To learn how to upgrade RAM please refer to the Memory Upgrade Instructions in  (Apple menu) About This Mac > Memory. That model is designed for a maximum of 8 GB RAM. Removing the 2 GB module will result in a supported memory configuration.

Please readIf kernel_task is using a large percentage of your Mac CPU - Apple Support as well as the links within it.

A runaway kernel_task can be due to a number of factors, such as:

  • a failed or disconnected temperature sensor
  • cooling system inefficiency (an inoperative exhaust fan on Macs so equipped, possibly clogged with dust, including the heat sink)
  • a worn out, missing, or non-Apple (user-installed) battery on portable Macs
  • similar hardware-specific causes including internal hardware additions or modifications, external USB and other connected devices, or the driver software required to use them.

Each of those possible causes is equally important and requires its own investigation.

If you can find no other explanation for its behavior, an SMC Reset is justified: Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support.
