How can I use mic in late 2013 MacBook Pro headphone jack?

I had read somewhere that the MacBook Pro would recognize a mic plugged into the single 35mm jack, so I bought a 3-ring 35mm adapter cable to connect my karaoke mic to the jack. It is not recognized; Sound Preferences does not see the mic, but thinks an external headphone is plugged in. Is there a way to use a mic with this jack? And, if so, what are my sound output options while using the mic?

Yes, you can record using the input plug and connect the headset to the output plug. The headphone will work like being directly plugged in.

Thank you, leonie. I don't know how the MacBook jack and hardware are configured, so excuse my ignorance. Will this allow me to use the mic and the headset at the same time? And if so, will the input/output produce mono into both headphone sides?

What kind of adapter did you get? You need an input splitter that will allow you to connect a mic and and a headset, like this one:

That should work with the iPhone headset jack.

Alternately you can connect a USB audio interface to the USB port, for example an iMic or apogee Jam.
