AOL mail not working on iPhone

Okay weird problem. I have been using AOL for over 20 years and have had the same email address. I have others, but this is my main email, so changing it as my main email would be cumbersome.

Anyway, a few days ago, my iPhone stopped updating with AOL email messages. I could access messages that were on my phone from that point and before, but nothing current, as in the past few days. So I went through Apple's troubleshooting steps of deleting the AOL account from the Settings on my iPhone, reinstalled it, and lo and behold, my phone's settings keeps telling me I have either the wrong password or the wrong email address/Name.

I tried this several times to no avail.

So I went onto my browser to make sure I had all my details correct (name, email address, password) and verified I did. So now, scratching my head, I used Safari to access AOL's site directly through the browser on phone. It asked me for my email address and password, and it works fine! Okay, so then I downloaded the AOL app, went through basic setup, same email, same password, and it also works fine!

Weird!

At this point I just removed the "Mail" icon from the first page of my Home Screen and replaced it with the App I just downloaded. It works fine, as does Safari. So obviously there is something wrong with my phone's settings. I just did the latest iOS update to see if that would help, and it doesn't.

So at this point, while I have AOL mail on my phone, both with the newly downloaded App as well as with a Safari Browser window, I would LOVE to know why the stock "Mail" app no longer works, and why my phone's "Settings" keeps spitting back an error message even though the password and email address work everywhere else but there.

Ok after dealing with this for 7 weeks it finally dawned on me. When u go into settings for ur AOL account under account security there is a 2 step log in process. Click manage. Make sure it’s turned on. Then under Connect Apps click manage. Click the down arrow for create a new application and choose IOS mail and the device is whatever device u r using (ie: iPhone, iPad etc). Click create. It will give u a password. Copy the password. Then go into create an aol account through the iPhone mail app and use the copied password. Hope this helps.

Uh .... AOL PAID account??? What in the world are you paying AOL for? They no longer offer dial up service, they no longer offer instant messaging service. As far as I know they're just a free legacy email service. I've only kept my AOL email address because I used it to sign up and register so many services over the past 30 years it would be a major project to migrate away from it.

But, seriously, who is paying for AOL and for what exactly?

(Also, if you weren't aware - AOL had a major email service outage last weekend 2/8-2/10 that was the cause of this flare up of issues. They've since corrected it, so if you're still having issues on iOS or Android native mail apps, try disconnecting and re-connecting your AOL account to the iOS or Android Mail apps fresh and that should establish a clean connection to their servers.)

Someone please help. I have had an AOL email account for over 20 years and since last week, everything has unraveled. Trying to migrate to a different email service makes my head hurt. Every 3 hours, my AOL email stops working on my iPhone and Mac. I have read through 15 pages of suggestions and tried several of them, but every 2-3 hours, my email stops syncing. Can someone pleeeease offer a solution to this problem? I have tried changing my password, tried turning off two factor authentication, tried using app passwords ( app password not accepted) etc , etc. HELP!

Suddenly mail icon not sending or recieving email for past week. I could access in browser via webmail so even though my password and adress were corect if I tried getting mail on ipad ipad touch or my ipad minie neither worked. I went to my pc changed password on aol and then changed pasword on each device. Seems to have fixed the problem. I did not want to delte mail app unless this did not work but there was no need to now that all seem to be working. Apple tech couldnt fix or aol customer rep who wantes me to sign up for aol to get free tech support.

I have always used two factor. Been hacked twice WITH two factor. Also had an unkown app password made on my account from another country. RUN if you can. I am stuck with them for now but slowly trying to switch to another email and close it. The app password has always worked well for me. I was hacked for the first time about 30 min after downloading and logging in to the AOL app from the app store maybe just my foil hat but I refuse to use it. Also AOL is down a LOT so a few times when I thought my email was acting foolish it was AOL. I do not think it is the phone or Apple. Settings and or if you have tried all of the above maybe it is out. Check the reviews on the actual app. Also paid customers seem to have a lot of issues so not sure what they are paying for. And I called about said issue and was told I had viruses and to give remote access and was quoted a few hundred to "fix" said viruses I did not have. Big YIKES for me.. Never let them do this. People have been scammed as I have recently read a lady did allow them to and it messed her PC up. To give up a right to not sue them to continue to use the email service is just well uncomfortable. Because they have been sued before I guess. L I have an idea of exatly who hacked me twice.. I hate that AOL was forced on us unless we gave up email that we have used for a decade or more.

I have same issue on Apple products. when filling out information on search engine I get "invalid e-mail address". I have been an apple disciple for over 20 years and I am getting fed up with their lack of service and dependable IOS products. Get you act together. If it is intentional to not play nice with others then your fate will run its own course.

Thanks to all. I finally got things sorted out. Not really sure which one of the suggestions worked but I am getting my emails again. Having said that, the message is clear. I need to run, not walk, from this account which I've had for 20 years as fast as I can. I found an iCloud alias email which is reasonable and will start the painful process of migrating.

I am glad one of the suggestions helped. I did look at the AOL support page and as of March 4th I think it was they want us to update the IMAP setting again :). However they are making it sound like you may be able to use AOL with the actual password for the iPhone app. But I am too aftaid to delete it and try it .. please feel free to marked the post that solved the problem if you like and keep us posted. I have had mine for about 15 years now and I am slowly moving away from them. Please look at the many hacking reports people are telling them daily. Another thing to note on the AOL support site is a long article about the employees and how they will be punished if found to have acted improper. So strange to have to say that. And I am unsure how they will reprimand anyone like Suzan who tried to scam me because they do not use real names or any employee ID. From my XP at least.

Aol email on my iPhone stopped working recently in the same fashion as the OP. Difference is when I kept getting the error message saying my Aol email username and password were incorrect (even though they were not, like the OP), I decided to delete the Aol account off the iPhone and then attempt to setup the account again. During the setup, after I typed my Aol username and password, I immediately get an apple.com ad showing iPhones and prices. No error message. I have no idea why this ad shows up in a setup process. It only then gives me the option to press cancel, in turn cancelling out the whole email setup process. I have tried the two step verification and when I go back to set up my Aol email on the iPhone, I am again redirected to an apple.com ad showing iPhones and their prices. I have even also attempted setting up my Aol email account onto my partners iPhone and received the same apple.com iPhone ad in the setup process. What the heck is this??? Is this an Apple or an Aol glitch??? Though clunky, I have resorted to using another email app to view my Aol email on the iPhone for now. I refuse to utilize the official Aol app as it comes littered and loaded with other content not needed.

Is anyone able to just use the email password for the iPhone mail yet? I still have an app passcode and its always worked fine. But I also have two factor set up. I would NOT change security as I have had the fun hack adventures of AOL .. but I want to get away from the app password as even with two factor I found a second app password that was on my account from another country last year. I am slowly moving everything to another email but this one I still need.
