AOL mail not working on iPhone

Okay weird problem. I have been using AOL for over 20 years and have had the same email address. I have others, but this is my main email, so changing it as my main email would be cumbersome.

Anyway, a few days ago, my iPhone stopped updating with AOL email messages. I could access messages that were on my phone from that point and before, but nothing current, as in the past few days. So I went through Apple's troubleshooting steps of deleting the AOL account from the Settings on my iPhone, reinstalled it, and lo and behold, my phone's settings keeps telling me I have either the wrong password or the wrong email address/Name.

I tried this several times to no avail.

So I went onto my browser to make sure I had all my details correct (name, email address, password) and verified I did. So now, scratching my head, I used Safari to access AOL's site directly through the browser on phone. It asked me for my email address and password, and it works fine! Okay, so then I downloaded the AOL app, went through basic setup, same email, same password, and it also works fine!

Weird!

At this point I just removed the "Mail" icon from the first page of my Home Screen and replaced it with the App I just downloaded. It works fine, as does Safari. So obviously there is something wrong with my phone's settings. I just did the latest iOS update to see if that would help, and it doesn't.

So at this point, while I have AOL mail on my phone, both with the newly downloaded App as well as with a Safari Browser window, I would LOVE to know why the stock "Mail" app no longer works, and why my phone's "Settings" keeps spitting back an error message even though the password and email address work everywhere else but there.

Ok after dealing with this for 7 weeks it finally dawned on me. When u go into settings for ur AOL account under account security there is a 2 step log in process. Click manage. Make sure it’s turned on. Then under Connect Apps click manage. Click the down arrow for create a new application and choose IOS mail and the device is whatever device u r using (ie: iPhone, iPad etc). Click create. It will give u a password. Copy the password. Then go into create an aol account through the iPhone mail app and use the copied password. Hope this helps.

This also happens to me, but it’s worse.

1. AOL mail won’t send or receive on my iPhone.

2. Also won’t send or receive on my pc in outlook

3. Webmail on my pc works fine.

4. Logging into webmail on my pc fixed both iPhone mail and outlook pc mail.

AOL help has had me pay for a subscription to their tech support. After two phone calls , almost 2 hours each, they’re unable to fix it. They keep talking about third party apps. I don’t see how the same problem can exist in 2 third part apps (pc outlook and iPhone).

I hope someone has an idea.

This exact thing happened to me and I figured out why! A few days before I had inadvertently changed a setting on the AOL Account Settings page on my desk top computer! I was in my AOL Account checking things out and on the Account Settings page the last setting says:

Allow apps that use less secure sign in

Some non-AOL apps and devices use less secure sign-in technology, which could leave your account vulnerable. You can turn off access (which we recommend) or choose to use them despite the risks.

I noticed it was turned off and the recommendation was to turn it on (see above) - so I did! It seemed harmless enough! After that I could not get or send mail on my iphone anymore! I went back in to the Account Settings page on my desk top and changed that setting back to "off". Immediately checked my phone and everything is working again!

I hope this helps someone!

This has just happened to me today after updating IOS

AOL password is correct on their website/App etc but not working on Iphone Mail

On the AOL website settings, Account Security there is the option to ‘Manage App Passwords’. Click the option for Iphone Mail (or Ipad) and you will be generated a random one off password

Go to Iphone settings and use this as your AOL password (rather than your actual one)

Worked for me and everything now synced and updated

Ok this is how you fix it. Had all the exact same issues. Go to Safari on iPhone> log in to AOL>then select account>account security>manage app passwords,(does not have to be aol app, works the same just for phone mail app)>select iPhone mail>generate password. It will be a long password. Write it down, when you go back to Email settings on iPhone, it will be this password you put in your phone including spaces in between. It will not be your normal password. AOL now has a two step authentication. Once you enter this password. Check marks will appear by all aol related items. Your phone will automatically default to iCloud email, go to Email under settings, change default to AOL. Done it works. My husband had every issue all others had. This is the fix. Hope this helps!

This is the most ourtragous problem...I too have been using Aol for 20 years...and now am so frustrated with the lack of planning Aol has neglected to do...now it’s part of Verizon today, yahoo yesterday...wtf

Aol has screwed up Iphone and ipads...and no mail loads and comes though.

I dislike the Aol Ap. It is cumbersome. Not well designed. And does not function the way I work. So the ap is not an option.

Apple tech has been wonderful but when u put crap in you get crap out. Aol is sadly big time crap.

their servers do not permit removal of emails (100,000+) and are clogging systems...this is just one of the Aol issues.

Aol planning engineers obviously do not play nice in the field with other communications companies when building their newest program.

If you call and get an Aol tech on the phone their people are rude, condescending and obnoxious an located in centers in some other region, English maybe, but a non American speaking English region. (How dare they use the title America on line!)

I have deleted Aol from my apple devices and reinstalled at least 20 x with the help of an apple tec and now on my own. AOL is constipating my devices. I am furious. If u have this problem, it is real...and you too need to make some efforts to reach main Verizon offices, the newest owner of Aol. Perhaps if enough complaints are made immediately Aol system engineers may be ordered to work with consumers in mind and compatable with the many devices on the market.

Aol is either arrogant or simply does not care enough to take their members into consideration. So far for me there is no solution except to remove Aol and reinstall after almost every email on my iPhone and iPad.

not a good way to function. Right?

THANK YOU!!! I had been looking for answer for hours. I figured it out last year and thought I wrote it down. glad that I could find it again. Unfortunately the section for iCalendar instructions iOS out of date. Not sure where in settings to put it in. Mail is separated from, "passwords & accounts" and separated from calendar. My calendar that needs an update is aol, but the controller of the calendar is mac's me.com. If you have any ideas, please, please e-mail me. thanks! :) m.g.otto@me.com

I had the exactly same problem. Deleted my AOL accounts with no luck at getting them back.......Until I logged into the AOL website directly from my browser, AOL then prompted me with a question, was it okay to use AOL with my Mac or other accounts. (or something like that).........When I clicked okay, it loaded the AOL account back in my System Preferences on my computer. (You may have to do this technique with your phone too, although the deleting method alone worked for me).

Hope this help resolve your issue too!

I had this same problem with AOL on my iPhone. Tried ALL the "fixes" except for deleting the account and reloading it - I didn't want to do that in case I never got it to work again. I also verified (and also re-entered) my username and password in my iPhone. Nothing worked. But I did figure out a solution - and it is super easy - AND I don't think you ever need to do more than my procedure if you're getting the "Username or password incorrect" message.

Use another device (laptop, desktop, etc.) to access your AOL account via a browser. CHANGE your password. Logout and Login to verify your NEW password. If OK, log out again. Go to your iPhone and CHANGE your password to the new one you set. Voila! Works great. I can only assume that the iPhone has some glitch at times and even if you delete and then re-enter the password again ... it doesn't work and the glitch remains. Cache issue? IDK The key is to CHANGE the password in the phone to match what you set via the browser step. I suppose you could do this same thing using the browser on your phone to change the AOL password, but I'll have to wait until my iPhone screws up again to test that. BTE - This happened to me a couple of years ago and the "fix" I described above worked then, as it did today. Hope this helps someone else!!! Cheers

This happens to me with my iOS Mail app and my AOL account. At seemingly random times it stops being able to retrieve new emails and the error code says that my username and/or password are incorrect. I've been able to correct this every time it happens by going to my Safari browser, logging out of my AOL account on AOL Mail's website and then logging back in.

After I do that, when I return to my iOS Mail app and refresh it is able to receive and send mail again with no issues. It's mildly inconvenient but it doesn't occur daily, so I haven't really looked for a better solution.

All of my inbound and outbound email credentials and imap data is 100% accurate, so it's not that. I suspect this is something on AOL's end that gets hung up, and a log out/in on the device clears it up.

OMGSH! Been working on this for 2-3 days!! I have 4 email accounts, I'm receiving mail fine but cannot send. Keeps telling me its a gmail password that's not correct. Well after doing everything that's been mentioned and turning off/on all my email accounts...now it's coming up aol password! Which I should've know from the start it was aol because aol is always an issue! Something like this did happen to me also a few years back on my iphone 7. I figured with an X I would be glitch free! Going to try the password thing that FrankV mentioned! Ugh! Better work! I'm ready to toss this phone and never get an iphone again!

The problem is that aol and apple have ego issues...engineers should communicate info between companies.

its not an apple issue alone. Aol needs to make some overtures and iron out this issue or they stand to loose accounts. Paying accounts...There isn’t even a call center in the USA for Aol...and they have the nerve to call themselves ‘america on line’

I don’t think so....they don’t serve Americans well. Call centers are staffed by nasty non American english speaking personnel- who attack and/or reroute customers...apple or Aol or both preferably need to take this situation and solve it. It would be a very positive PR move...for one of those companies....or they will loose us all.

lol boy you are right about that! Especially since this has been an on going issue and it does seem to occur when the updates come out. But this time I didn’t update my phone yet and it happened. I finally changed the password (by logging into AOL from my pc), then changing it on my iPhone. Still didn’t like that. So I had to delete the AOL mail and reinstall. Just tried to send an email and it did go thru. Now I will have to see if I am receiving from all accounts and can send from all accounts tmr. Apple and AOL def need to get their **** together!
