AOL mail not working on iPhone

Okay weird problem. I have been using AOL for over 20 years and have had the same email address. I have others, but this is my main email, so changing it as my main email would be cumbersome.

Anyway, a few days ago, my iPhone stopped updating with AOL email messages. I could access messages that were on my phone from that point and before, but nothing current, as in the past few days. So I went through Apple's troubleshooting steps of deleting the AOL account from the Settings on my iPhone, reinstalled it, and lo and behold, my phone's settings keeps telling me I have either the wrong password or the wrong email address/Name.

I tried this several times to no avail.

So I went onto my browser to make sure I had all my details correct (name, email address, password) and verified I did. So now, scratching my head, I used Safari to access AOL's site directly through the browser on phone. It asked me for my email address and password, and it works fine! Okay, so then I downloaded the AOL app, went through basic setup, same email, same password, and it also works fine!

Weird!

At this point I just removed the "Mail" icon from the first page of my Home Screen and replaced it with the App I just downloaded. It works fine, as does Safari. So obviously there is something wrong with my phone's settings. I just did the latest iOS update to see if that would help, and it doesn't.

So at this point, while I have AOL mail on my phone, both with the newly downloaded App as well as with a Safari Browser window, I would LOVE to know why the stock "Mail" app no longer works, and why my phone's "Settings" keeps spitting back an error message even though the password and email address work everywhere else but there.

I’ve had the same problem, finally found a solution. Use safari go to aol.com to sign in. Go to account security, then click on generate app password, from there you will see “select app” click on iPhone mail. Then press generate. Copy the password it generates, go back to settings, account and passwords and add account, aol. Input your name and username but instead of your own password paste on the one you copy from safari.

OMG! Same problem almost. Got phone last year and no problem with mail icon on phone. Then couple of times I could not get on( I have Verizon/aol) I googled what to do-put phone in airplane mode, press both the volume and Power off button at same time. Then power back on andtake out of airplane mode. Well that worked twice.

This week 6 times this happened and other method won't work. Went to Verizon store and he put the aol app on my phone. Then I got it both places. The 2 days later only in aol not the other. Later on both worked( I did nothing to it)!(think Phone is possessed lol) then worked beautifully in both places. Early Evr I g tonight mail icon won't work. Have to see what tomorrow brings. Making me sick. Mon I go

Back to Verizon store. At least I am not the only one. One good thing about AOL app is when you erase on phone it erases on computer.

Anyone have any suggestions.

The only thing I did tonight was download an app to have verizon icon on phone. Personally I hate Verizon but I am sticking with it fir the time being

I have redone the passwords etc with same ones but that did not help either I have to go to Apple.

Glad yours was resolved

Hello ... I was curious if you ever resolved the issue with AOL. I too was having the same exact issue (and AOL has been my main email for 15+ years)

At first I thought I’d been hacked. Then I was so desperate that I was actually considering upgrading to a new phone thinking the problem was internal. For now I’ve downloaded the AOL app and access my mail that way -what a pain- but at least I still have access. Now my yahoo and gmail account are the only accounts that have been successfully added to my “MAIL” account through my iPhone. I can no longer access my AOL that way.

I’m hoping you have a solution to this craziness!!

Have you had any luck with the server issue with AOL? I too have been having the exact same problem. I am long time AOL user and now I’m unable to use my standers iPhone MAIL app to access AOL. I can only access it through the AOL app that I had to download. I’ve tried everything and to always comes back with IMAP AOL server error. I even considered getting a new phone just to resolve the issue . With my luck, I’d prob end up with the same issue.

I’m hoping to hear you found out how to resolve this issue!!

Thanks ... Gina 🏼

When the Verizon store downloaded the AOL icon on my phone mail is coming and going. BUT the icon "mail" that comes with phone is the problem. It works then decides to take a vacation for several hours or even a day. Then miraculously comes back. Yesterday all day gone and today fine. Do I have no clue and I suggest going to the Apple store in person( which eventually I will do) and let one of their tech gurus figure it out

Just so your aware AOL mail may not be secure on your device if you do not set up the advanced setting via your phone. If you see a lock when sending an email in the right corner from your phone and tap it and it does not lock your emails are not secure. Also FYI AOL has been putting "email accounts" when viewed on PC that the user did not create. When you go to send mail from PC click the sender and make sure you recognize all email accounts with AOL. shady they are trust me

No, sorry to tell you, you were scammed out of $199, AND you gave a criminal access to the data on your computer. And NO, it was not a legit AOL number. You fell for a very common scam that criminal hackers use to steal identities and data (many people fall for it), and they probably still have access to your computer. So you really need to wipe it clean and set it up as if it was new, and don't restore any backups that you may have made after you paid the $199. Also, cancel the credit card that you used, file a fraud report for the $199 (you may get it back) as well as any other credit cards you had saved on your computer. Also change all of the passwords that you may have used with the computer, because the crooks now know them and can access your bank accounts and any other accounts you may have accessed from your computer. You may want to go to a computer repair service if you are not comfortable doing all of this. A reputable one, like Geek Squad or equivalent.

One simple thing you should do right now is go to https://malwarebytes.com and download and install malwarebytes, then run it. It will find any malware that was installed by the criminal hackers. The Home free version is all you need.

If you set up AOL mail correctly it is secure. But that isn't your biggest problem at the moment.
