AOL mail not working on iPhone

Okay weird problem. I have been using AOL for over 20 years and have had the same email address. I have others, but this is my main email, so changing it as my main email would be cumbersome.

Anyway, a few days ago, my iPhone stopped updating with AOL email messages. I could access messages that were on my phone from that point and before, but nothing current, as in the past few days. So I went through Apple's troubleshooting steps of deleting the AOL account from the Settings on my iPhone, reinstalled it, and lo and behold, my phone's settings keeps telling me I have either the wrong password or the wrong email address/Name.

I tried this several times to no avail.

So I went onto my browser to make sure I had all my details correct (name, email address, password) and verified I did. So now, scratching my head, I used Safari to access AOL's site directly through the browser on phone. It asked me for my email address and password, and it works fine! Okay, so then I downloaded the AOL app, went through basic setup, same email, same password, and it also works fine!

Weird!

At this point I just removed the "Mail" icon from the first page of my Home Screen and replaced it with the App I just downloaded. It works fine, as does Safari. So obviously there is something wrong with my phone's settings. I just did the latest iOS update to see if that would help, and it doesn't.

So at this point, while I have AOL mail on my phone, both with the newly downloaded App as well as with a Safari Browser window, I would LOVE to know why the stock "Mail" app no longer works, and why my phone's "Settings" keeps spitting back an error message even though the password and email address work everywhere else but there.

Ok after dealing with this for 7 weeks it finally dawned on me. When u go into settings for ur AOL account under account security there is a 2 step log in process. Click manage. Make sure it’s turned on. Then under Connect Apps click manage. Click the down arrow for create a new application and choose IOS mail and the device is whatever device u r using (ie: iPhone, iPad etc). Click create. It will give u a password. Copy the password. Then go into create an aol account through the iPhone mail app and use the copied password. Hope this helps.

Yes there are many issues with AOL mail .I finally got it figured out with the help of Apple support. Had to change to the correct port 587 and deleting and reinstall email account. Worked on my phone but had to go in a different way with my wife's phone.Had to go in under "other"to reinstall mail account. I came up with the correct server port 587 on its own. Hope it stays connected now. Thanks everyone on this thread for all your help.

I too have run into this issue and have tried all the suggestions out there but none of them worked for me. I was only able to find one solution, I wanted to post this to help others who haven't been able to find a fix.

- I have the 2 authentication turned off.

- Make sure your devices are closed out of aol (I inactivate mine),

- In your aol account (on the website) under security, turn off - "Allow apps that use less secure sign in"

- Leave it off for a min and turn it back on - "Allow apps that use less secure sign in"

- Go back to your Device's Mail settings - turn on aol and open aol mail

- Should work again

This is the only thing that has worked for me. Hope it helps!

What do I do step by step. I have an AOL email address. Is it a sprint problem? Is it an AOL problem. Is it apple settings I I should change or sprint or AOL. Help I am getting older by the minute and am frustrated

my iphone refuses to accept my password despite I know it is the right one., so I cannot log in to my account with safari, is it possible to do this on my computer, I can get my emails ok on the computer. All this came about with being hacked, I have had to change all my passwords, cancel all credit cards, , I have been locked out of PayPa; , its been terrible, do not allow anyone to go into your computer with remote access as there are many very expert scammers out there

Let me repeat what I said in the post you responded to, with emphasis:

You must log in to your AOL account using a web browser on a computer. This is where you will find the security settings.

I tried logging in with the browser but it did not show any proper settings at all, I used google. I think this might be a verizon problem or an Apple problem unless it is to do with the hacker messing it all up. Thanks for trying to help me though

No, it is a problem with your AOL account. Depending on whether you have AOL's 2 factor authentication or not the solution will be different.

If you have 2 FA for AOL (not for Apple) you must generate an application specific passcode for your iPhone's AOL account. It will be different from your regular AOL password. You then set up your AOL email on your phone using this passcode.

If you don't have 2FA for AOL (you should, BTW, especially since you have been hacked once) you need to authorize another device to access AOL email.

The other option is to install the AOL email app for your phone from the app store. This will work with your regular AOL ID and password.

I have an Iphone 7. As of 11/2, I discovered I wasn't picking up any new emails on my phone since 10/22. I did all of the above to no avail. Therefore, I went to AOL directly from my Safari, and it showed that my account was in the cloud, I downloaded it, entered my password and now use the aol icon instead of the mail icon, deleted the mail icon and I'm back in business!

It's a glitch, apparently.

I had this issue and this is what just worked for me. I went into AOL with my password which definitely works. I noticed that the option "Allow apps that use less secure sign in" (under account security) was checked. I unchecked this and now the password verification goes through. Not ideal as I would like a more secure sign in but no other choices I think.

Hi

Log in on Aol.com with your Email and password... open the account settings...

now you got two options...

1: Enable 2-step authentication and create a password for the way your prefer to look your Inbox (iphone mail app, ipad mail app, etc etc.) and use this Created password and your email adress to log in instead of the real Password

OR

2: DISABLE (if activated) 2-step authentication and ACTIVATE the option down beneath it... (allow non secure Apps to acces the mail inbox)... and then just set up the device you would like to use Aol mail with , with the regular password and Email adress.

Both ways worked for me on. Hope to help some of you.

HOPE AOL and APPLE will fix this weired problem T.O.G.E.T.H.E.R... saying this is a AOL Problem OR saying this is an Apple problem.. did not solve it... sometimes only teamwork can do the fix.

Best wishes

I had a similar problem - I couldn’t send mail from the iPhone Mail app after I had set it up for AOL. The error message said my AOL pw was wrong but I know I typed it in correctly. I finally figured out a solution:

1. From the browser on your iPhone, pull up aol.com and sign in as usual. You should see an option to enable 2 factor authentication, so do that.

2. Select the Mail icon on your iPhone. You should see a message that 2 factor authentication for AOL is incompatible with iOS mail; it will then show how to generate a one-time use password - copy that pw because it’s really long.

3. Sign into AOL from iPhone Mail, using the temporary pw. The Mail app will remember it from then on.

I apologize for not going into greater detail, but I hope this helps.
