AOL mail not working on iPhone

Okay weird problem. I have been using AOL for over 20 years and have had the same email address. I have others, but this is my main email, so changing it as my main email would be cumbersome.

Anyway, a few days ago, my iPhone stopped updating with AOL email messages. I could access messages that were on my phone from that point and before, but nothing current, as in the past few days. So I went through Apple's troubleshooting steps of deleting the AOL account from the Settings on my iPhone, reinstalled it, and lo and behold, my phone's settings keeps telling me I have either the wrong password or the wrong email address/Name.

I tried this several times to no avail.

So I went onto my browser to make sure I had all my details correct (name, email address, password) and verified I did. So now, scratching my head, I used Safari to access AOL's site directly through the browser on phone. It asked me for my email address and password, and it works fine! Okay, so then I downloaded the AOL app, went through basic setup, same email, same password, and it also works fine!

Weird!

At this point I just removed the "Mail" icon from the first page of my Home Screen and replaced it with the App I just downloaded. It works fine, as does Safari. So obviously there is something wrong with my phone's settings. I just did the latest iOS update to see if that would help, and it doesn't.

So at this point, while I have AOL mail on my phone, both with the newly downloaded App as well as with a Safari Browser window, I would LOVE to know why the stock "Mail" app no longer works, and why my phone's "Settings" keeps spitting back an error message even though the password and email address work everywhere else but there.

Ok after dealing with this for 7 weeks it finally dawned on me. When u go into settings for ur AOL account under account security there is a 2 step log in process. Click manage. Make sure it’s turned on. Then under Connect Apps click manage. Click the down arrow for create a new application and choose IOS mail and the device is whatever device u r using (ie: iPhone, iPad etc). Click create. It will give u a password. Copy the password. Then go into create an aol account through the iPhone mail app and use the copied password. Hope this helps.

Not great advice. If it's on, generate an Application Specific Password. Leave it on. It's your only protection against hackers. AOL mail is one of the most widely hacked email services, primarily because AOL users tend to use easily guessed passwords. If your password isn't at least 12 random characters (preferably 20) your AOL account will be hacked eventually, unless you have 2 Factor Authentication enabled.

I’ve started to have the same problem recently. No AOL emails coming to iPhone. I deleted, turned phone off, then on, then reinstalled the account. Same problem! Here’s what works...sign on to AOL thru your browser. Then suddenly your iPhone works...all the mail comes in. It will work for a while then the problem recurs. I suspect AOL has added some new security feature. If this continues I will abandon my AOL account ... after 30 years!

If you have 2 factor authentication enabled on your AOL account you need to generate an application-specific password to use with a non-AOL mail app like the built in email on an iOS device.

If you don't have 2 factor authentication (and you should) you may still need to tell AOL that you are adding a new device. You do this in the Security settings when you log in to AOL.

This has happened to me several times. It comes up randomly. You discover it when you can’t send mail and get the “server at imap.aol.com is not responding” message. Then you realize you have not received new mail in 24 hrs. It always happens simultaneously on you iPhone and iPad mail app. For whatever reason, the Apple mail app and AOL mail stop speaking to each other.

There is a very easy solution.

On your iPhone (or iPad), go to settings/accounts and passwords/my AOL mail account and DELETE your AOL mail account

Reboot your iPhone/iPad

Go into settings/accounts and passwords

Click Add Account and ADD your AOL mail account

When you do this on your iPad, it will ask you to turn off Notes (directly under mail acct.). Other than that, deleting and reinstalling your aol account on your iPhone and iPad is identical.

You will not loss anything. It’s all stored in the cloud, as well as on the other apple device.

@chiroVette

incase you haven't found this...

THIS WAS ANNOYING AS HECK and the AOL app is to much extra BS(news/weather blah blah blah)

we just want email, right?

1. sign into your AOL at the Aol home page. -->

2. go to mail. -->

3. go to accounts -->

4. security -->

5 other apps -->

6 Turn ON "allow apps that are less secure"

7. boom!!! your working in the standard iPhone "MAIL" app

hope this helps, registered just to share, after 7 straight annoying hours and finally figuring this out!

Signed into Aol.com when intomail settings and 2 step verification was not on. But I notices I had. Red triangle next to my home phone on that page. I deleted it, left 2 step verification off, signed off and checked my mail and it updated. Hope that was it!

I have spent an hour on the phone with Apple 2 times in the last 2 weeks and they could not permanently resolve the issue. Each time we deleted Aol account and readied. 10 minutes in here and hopefully it’s fixed! Not sure we Apple Care could not find this answer in the 2 hours I was on the phone with them since this solution is on Apple Help.

If you haven’t fixed it yet do what “spoyledbra” said to do.It worked for me.I was having the same problems as you,tried everting you did and nothing.Till I went to aol settings and did the 2 step verification and copied the password and paste it on my aol account password on my iPhone and BAM it stated downloading all my messages again and able to send again.No more email incorrect setting messages.

I have been working on this for 3 days and finally called AOL and was told they could recover my 2000 Emails but it would cost me 35.00 a month. That was for a package that contained tech support, identity theft, AARP discounts, I stopped him right there and told him I didn't need a package I just wanted my emails back. I told him I had them Sunday and Monday afternoon they were gone. He said he could downgrade the package to 9.95 a month and I told him I was not doing that and he said what if he gives me a 30 day free trial. At that point I told him to shove it. I said I had just seen an ad in AOL trying to sell data recovery in a package so I figured they turned off my Emails and are holding them hostage.

I doubt it is an AOL issue but something with your device. Open a browser, type in AOL.com, try signing into your mail that way. If you can get in that way then it’s a problem in the settings in your mail on your Apple device. You can call Apple support and they can walk you through it. If you scroll down the page there are other people that I’ve had the same problem and multiple solutions on fixing it.

AOL - iPHONE MAIL SOLUTION 9/13/2018

I recently came across this problem. I have 3 aol email accounts on my iphone. All have worked fine for years. Recently i applied the 2 step verification to one account.

It worked for about 2 days then my emails stopped functioning. It left a message about the infamous ((Imap) that it sends out.

I tried everything and i mean everything.

Then it dawned on me to turn the 2 step verification off. Once i turned it off my emails reloaded into my phone however another few days passed and the IMAP message appeared again.

I had exhausted all possible solutions on that last round but one.

I went back to the security page on the aol account.

I turned the 2 step verification back on and entered the code they send via text to my phone....

THE NEXT STEP WILL SOLVE THE PROBLEM

This is the step i initially tried to avoid however it is crucial to making your iphone receive emails now.

Below the 2 step security is a section to create a password for your app.

Its very simple.

Just click on the drop down and select the type of phone you are using ( in this case iPhone)

They will then say to click to create a password.

Take this password and enter it in your settings under that email. This password will replace your password. After you enter it, click done.

Your emails will reload onto your phone.

Good luck

After using AOL by preference for over 20 years this happened to me this morning. I deleted AOL & reinstalled —didn’t work. I followed every tip I could find and nothing worked until I stumbled upon this link:

https://www.lifewire.com/what-are-aol-mail-imap-settings-1170847

Look for the section that that gives the actual AOL IMAP settings—-what worked for me was going to the “SMTP Outgoing Server Address...confirming it is set to ****.aol.com. AND THEN CHANGING THE PORT TO: 587 as the article recommends.
