AOL mail not working on iPhone

Okay weird problem. I have been using AOL for over 20 years and have had the same email address. I have others, but this is my main email, so changing it as my main email would be cumbersome.

Anyway, a few days ago, my iPhone stopped updating with AOL email messages. I could access messages that were on my phone from that point and before, but nothing current, as in the past few days. So I went through Apple's troubleshooting steps of deleting the AOL account from the Settings on my iPhone, reinstalled it, and lo and behold, my phone's settings keeps telling me I have either the wrong password or the wrong email address/Name.

I tried this several times to no avail.

So I went onto my browser to make sure I had all my details correct (name, email address, password) and verified I did. So now, scratching my head, I used Safari to access AOL's site directly through the browser on phone. It asked me for my email address and password, and it works fine! Okay, so then I downloaded the AOL app, went through basic setup, same email, same password, and it also works fine!

Weird!

At this point I just removed the "Mail" icon from the first page of my Home Screen and replaced it with the App I just downloaded. It works fine, as does Safari. So obviously there is something wrong with my phone's settings. I just did the latest iOS update to see if that would help, and it doesn't.

So at this point, while I have AOL mail on my phone, both with the newly downloaded App as well as with a Safari Browser window, I would LOVE to know why the stock "Mail" app no longer works, and why my phone's "Settings" keeps spitting back an error message even though the password and email address work everywhere else but there.

Ok after dealing with this for 7 weeks it finally dawned on me. When u go into settings for ur AOL account under account security there is a 2 step log in process. Click manage. Make sure it’s turned on. Then under Connect Apps click manage. Click the down arrow for create a new application and choose IOS mail and the device is whatever device u r using (ie: iPhone, iPad etc). Click create. It will give u a password. Copy the password. Then go into create an aol account through the iPhone mail app and use the copied password. Hope this helps.

Exactly what I’m going through. But I recently after 2 months am receiving emails now, but cannot send. Tells me wrong user name/password. I go in and reset them and still same thing. Before it would say incorrect IMAP path or something. Apple knows nothing, blames AOL, Verizon blames Apple and AOL doesn’t have a clue. FRUSTRATING 😡

Finally after a few weeks this is the message I got on my AOL account I followed the instructions and lo and behold my email worked on my Outlook

If you still want to use an app that uses less secure sign in, go to https://login.aol.com/account/security#other-apps and turn on "Allow apps that use less secure sign in". This is not recommended and may leave your account more vulnerable to compromise. To learn more, please visit our help page: https://help.aol.com/.

This morning I could neither receive nor send nor receive emails on one of the two aol accounts I have on my iPhone. I found this forum question and while I was reading all the responses I was mysteriously able to receive emails even though I had done nothing to my phone. I am still unable to send any emails however, and the phone keeps trying to send two test emails that I tried earlier in the day.

Problem resolved by coincidence! I've never participated but been struggling with this and may help someone like me.

After doing everything advised, my problem could not be resolved. An iPhone personnel even suggested resetting my phone which I found too harsh a remedy because it could reset all of my information. So I printed the instructions but did not try it.

Finally... after countless tries, I went into my AOL account on my desktop (not my phone) with the intention of verifying my data to see if I was going crazy or something. There it prompted me to generate a passcode for an installation on my iPhone, which I did, then I entered the information on my iPhone mail set up again with this newly generated passcode, not my regular passcode, and IT WORKED. I have mail on my phone again.

Obviously, the passcode I use to sign in on my AOL account is not (now) to install AOL mail on my iPhone.

This information is under the tab ACCOUNT SECURITY in my AOL account. I sincerely hope it works for you.

I think maybe AOL was hacked and not saying anything? . I got so much spam right before it stopped working on my phone. When I spoke to them they knew nothing about the issue ( which seems like BS since tons of people are having the same problem!) but did say maybe it was a security problem. UGH

No, AOL was not hacked. If you read more of this thread you will find the solution, or just read the post right after yours.

I do not have 2 part authentication either. I did go and delete account again and then reinstalled it. Now SOMEHOW I am able to send emails for now.. magically works now. Only took 3 months lol

It's not magic. An email account is composed of 2 separate parts. The Incoming and Outgoing functions use different servers, and each requires a user ID and passcode. For most ISPs they are the same server addresses, but they don't have to be. If you change your password for the account you thus must change it in 2 places. Or delete the account and add it back; the new account process inserts the password into both the incoming and outgoing server settings.

My wife's phone was having this problem and Apple Support provided a solution that worked for us. On a separate device, sign in to your aol account. Click on your name in the upper right corner of the aol home page to access your account. Click on "Account Security." You will be asked to enter your username and password. After doing so, you will be taken to the Account Security page. Find the setting that says "allow apps that use less secure sign in." If the toggle is in the "off" position, turn to on.

That's it! Good luck!

I just acquired the same problem today. Fixed it by going to AOL account on Mac. Signed in, went to account security. Enabled two step verification. After I did this, Manage app passwords came up.....I had it generate a random password. It then directed me to the place to enter it on my phone. Did that and then the mail app on the iPhone worked. I spent 5 hours and multiple tries doing everything everyone else previously did to no avail. This worked immediately. Hope it works for you.

So I couldn't get my aol mail on my Iphone in Mail. I had been hacked and had changed my aol passwords. But I couldn't get the new password to work or the emails in Mail. I deleted my accounts and tried restoring them. Nothing worked. But I had also changed a setting in aol, when I changed the password, that said I couldn't sign in from a device that didn't have strict security protocols. Didn't realize this meant my iphone! After struggling and researching for hours, I logged into my aol from my computer and there were all these emails saying they had blocked my log in! So avoid being as stupid as I was. The solution may be in the aol settings and nothing to do with the phone!

Have been trying to fix this same issue - when you say 'Settings/Accounts & Passwords' can you direct me to where this is? I have an old 6 or 6s and settings have different names/info on different models. Also, if it is where I am seeing it settings/mail/accounts/aol/SMTP/on/ the area for password is greyed out. Additionally it says in there that I am using a different server port than apple has listed for me under 'check server port' or whatever they call that link.

TIA
