AOL mail not working on iPhone

Okay weird problem. I have been using AOL for over 20 years and have had the same email address. I have others, but this is my main email, so changing it as my main email would be cumbersome.

Anyway, a few days ago, my iPhone stopped updating with AOL email messages. I could access messages that were on my phone from that point and before, but nothing current, as in the past few days. So I went through Apple's troubleshooting steps of deleting the AOL account from the Settings on my iPhone, reinstalled it, and lo and behold, my phone's settings keeps telling me I have either the wrong password or the wrong email address/Name.

I tried this several times to no avail.

So I went onto my browser to make sure I had all my details correct (name, email address, password) and verified I did. So now, scratching my head, I used Safari to access AOL's site directly through the browser on phone. It asked me for my email address and password, and it works fine! Okay, so then I downloaded the AOL app, went through basic setup, same email, same password, and it also works fine!

Weird!

At this point I just removed the "Mail" icon from the first page of my Home Screen and replaced it with the App I just downloaded. It works fine, as does Safari. So obviously there is something wrong with my phone's settings. I just did the latest iOS update to see if that would help, and it doesn't.

So at this point, while I have AOL mail on my phone, both with the newly downloaded App as well as with a Safari Browser window, I would LOVE to know why the stock "Mail" app no longer works, and why my phone's "Settings" keeps spitting back an error message even though the password and email address work everywhere else but there.

Ok after dealing with this for 7 weeks it finally dawned on me. When u go into settings for ur AOL account under account security there is a 2 step log in process. Click manage. Make sure it’s turned on. Then under Connect Apps click manage. Click the down arrow for create a new application and choose IOS mail and the device is whatever device u r using (ie: iPhone, iPad etc). Click create. It will give u a password. Copy the password. Then go into create an aol account through the iPhone mail app and use the copied password. Hope this helps.

THIS IS AN APPLE PROBLEM!!! ... because the same aol account works perfectly on my new iPhone 8 but can’t receive emails on my husband’s new iPhone 8. We both updated to iOS 11.4 last night. His AOL account works perfectly on my phone but has the same problems you all have on his. I compared ALL account settings and they are all the same. I compared all phone settings and those are the same too. (I also tried everything that was suggested in this thread before.) ... But since the same AOL account works on one phone but doesn’t work on an identical phone it HAS to be a setting issue with that phone. ...?

I had this problem before and followed Lawrence Finch's advice to delete the AOL account and set it up again. It worked for a few weeks. Today I am unable to access any of my two AOL email accounts AND two Comcast accounts that I have set up on my phone. Deleting the accounts and setting them up again does not work either.

I also went to settings and my aol account, then SMTP, then tried to enter my aol screen names and passwords, However for each SMTP account, it says OFF and when I tap on each one to try and enter the screen names and passwords, all the information is greyed out and I am unable to enter in information. Very frustrating.

By now people who are more IT savvy than I am have probably solved this problem. But I offer for your consideration the solution I found: like everyone else I deleted my aol account, shut down, reactivated, changed the password, manually added the account, etc etc several times —all to no avail. Then on the AOL app I found an obscure setting that allows —or not— my email on “less secure” apps. Once i permitted my mail On “less secure” apps (apple) my aol mail account instantly reappeared and updated on all my apple devices. It was an AOL setting; not an apple issues— for me. Hope this oscjelpfil

The reply I posted earlier is meant for Spoyledbrad 923 (in reply to Chirovette), who posted the solution that works for iPhone and iPad. I could not link to Spoyledbrad 923 to directly respond. The solution posted by Spoyledbrat 923 on April 20, 2018 works perfectly! Thank you!!! (on computer, select two-step verification on AOL account, select app passwords, select iPhone, AOL sends a password for iPhone. Then add AOL account on iPhone, fill in name, email, password provided by AOL, and save). The same steps can be taken for iPad. (The AOL link to get started is: https://login.aol.com/account/security?)

My mom was having the same problem and after reading a response below, I was able to figure it out! It used to be that your AOL mail password (when set up on iPhone) was your actual password, but that is not the case anymore for some reason. Follow the steps below and it should now work. I was able to get my moms working for her just this morning! The instructions below are done on using an iPhone, so they may vary if you get the password needed from a desktop, just FYI.

1.) go to www.login.aol.com and sign in with email and password.

2.) click the three horizontal lines in the upper right hand corner of the webpage and click on the box that has an icon of a person/your name underneath.

3.) click on the three horizontal lines again, this time on left hand side of webpage, and select account security.

4.) select manage app passwords.

5.) if an entry titled “iPhone mail” is listed, click the trash can icon to delete it. Then under select your app, choose iPhone mail and then click generate. Copy that unique password that is generated.

6.) now, under settings on your iPhone, follow the normal steps to add an email account onto an iPhone.

7.) when you get to the step where it asks for your Aol password, paste the unique password that you copied from the Aol website! Do not put your normal password you’d use when going to Aol.com. Now you should be all set and it should work!

I had this problem too. I discovered it was an AOL security issue. I turned off "Allow apps that use less secure sign in" in the AOL account settings (via aol mail on my computer), and then re-added the aol account on the phone. This enabled the phone to add the aol account again.

I turned the security setting back on again once it loaded. So far, I haven't had any issues, but time will tell... One thing - if you have Notes attached to the aol account, make sure you open the Notes account to reload them before turning the security setting off. Hope this helps!

I have a simple fix that worked for me. I simply went to safari on my iPhone and logged into my aol mail. When I went back to my mailbox on my iPhone, the account that had stopped working started downloading all my mail. I had already tried deleting and readding the account as well as restarting my phone before I opened up aol mail through safari.
