AOL mail not working on iPhone

Okay weird problem. I have been using AOL for over 20 years and have had the same email address. I have others, but this is my main email, so changing it as my main email would be cumbersome.

Anyway, a few days ago, my iPhone stopped updating with AOL email messages. I could access messages that were on my phone from that point and before, but nothing current, as in the past few days. So I went through Apple's troubleshooting steps of deleting the AOL account from the Settings on my iPhone, reinstalled it, and lo and behold, my phone's settings keeps telling me I have either the wrong password or the wrong email address/Name.

I tried this several times to no avail.

So I went onto my browser to make sure I had all my details correct (name, email address, password) and verified I did. So now, scratching my head, I used Safari to access AOL's site directly through the browser on phone. It asked me for my email address and password, and it works fine! Okay, so then I downloaded the AOL app, went through basic setup, same email, same password, and it also works fine!

Weird!

At this point I just removed the "Mail" icon from the first page of my Home Screen and replaced it with the App I just downloaded. It works fine, as does Safari. So obviously there is something wrong with my phone's settings. I just did the latest iOS update to see if that would help, and it doesn't.

So at this point, while I have AOL mail on my phone, both with the newly downloaded App as well as with a Safari Browser window, I would LOVE to know why the stock "Mail" app no longer works, and why my phone's "Settings" keeps spitting back an error message even though the password and email address work everywhere else but there.

Ok after dealing with this for 7 weeks it finally dawned on me. When u go into settings for ur AOL account under account security there is a 2 step log in process. Click manage. Make sure it’s turned on. Then under Connect Apps click manage. Click the down arrow for create a new application and choose IOS mail and the device is whatever device u r using (ie: iPhone, iPad etc). Click create. It will give u a password. Copy the password. Then go into create an aol account through the iPhone mail app and use the copied password. Hope this helps.

I have 2 aol accounts, have had them since the year dot. Cannot get one of them on my iPhone but have it on my iPad. Get the inevitable..... password not recognised. I can also use it on my pc which is win7. Trying to keep up but getting on a bit and I find it very frustrating. I think I will go back to pay as you go phone and save myself some money!!!!!

have downloaded the aol mobile app in case that was a problem, in fact have done it about 3 times. Too hot to think any more, many have to hit the gin bottle!!

This is a 100% AOL problem. If you read some of the posts in this thread you will learn how others have solved it.

To save you the trouble of scrolling up a few posts, I've copied them below:

I had this problem too. I discovered it was an AOL security issue. I turned off "Allow apps that use less secure sign in" in the AOL account settings (via aol mail on my computer), and then re-added the aol account on the phone. This enabled the phone to add the aol account again.

I turned the security setting back on again once it loaded. So far, I haven't had any issues, but time will tell... One thing - if you have Notes attached to the aol account, make sure you open the Notes account to reload them before turning the security setting off. Hope this helps!

I have a simple fix that worked for me. I simply went to safari on my iPhone and logged into my aol mail. When I went back to my mailbox on my iPhone, the account that had stopped working started downloading all my mail. I had already tried deleting and readding the account as well as restarting my phone before I opened up aol mail through safari.

and christinaerika0613 solved it as follows:

My mom was having the same problem and after reading a response below, I was able to figure it out! It used to be that your AOL mail password (when set up on iPhone) was your actual password, but that is not the case anymore for some reason. Follow the steps below and it should now work. I was able to get my moms working for her just this morning! The instructions below are done on using an iPhone, so they may vary if you get the password needed from a desktop, just FYI.

1.) go to www.login.aol.com and sign in with email and password.

2.) click the three horizontal lines in the upper right hand corner of the webpage and click on the box that has an icon of a person/your name underneath.

3.) click on the three horizontal lines again, this time on left hand side of webpage, and select account security.

4.) select manage app passwords.

5.) if an entry titled “iPhone mail” is listed, click the trash can icon to delete it. Then under select your app, choose iPhone mail and then click generate. Copy that unique password that is generated.

6.) now, under settings on your iPhone, follow the normal steps to add an email account onto an iPhone.

7.) when you get to the step where it asks for your Aol password, paste the unique password that you copied from the Aol website! Do not put your normal password you’d use when going to Aol.com. Now you should be all set and it should work!

OMG! Same problem almost. Got phone last year and no problem with mail icon on phone. Then couple of times I could not get on( I have Verizon/aol) I googled what to do-put phone in airplane mode, press both the volume and Power off button at same time. Then power back on andtake out of airplane mode. Well that worked twice.

This week 6 times this happened and other method won't work. Went to Verizon store and he put the aol app on my phone. Then I got it both places. The 2 days later only in aol not the other. Later on both worked( I did nothing to it)!(think Phone is possessed lol) then worked beautifully in both places. Early Evr I g tonight mail icon won't work. Have to see what tomorrow brings. Making me sick. Mon I go

Back to Verizon store. At least I am not the only one. One good thing about AOL app is when you erase on phone it erases on computer.

Anyone have any suggestions.

Hi Carol. Also a Verizon person now using AOL mail. In the past when I have had this problem, turning off and turning back on worked. This past Sunday that did not work so I deleted and reinstalled the account in the mail app on my iPad and then suddenly it worked on both my iPad and iPhone. Then, today, got the error message again on both devices. So I logged into my AOL account on Safari on my Mac, changed my password, then changed my password on my iPad and iPhone, and it's working again.

I prefer using the Mail app on my devices because I can have one in-box for my accounts. But if this keeps happening I might have to use the AOL app. Or maybe just switch to Gmail!

Hi Alice,

This is my 2nd reply to you. I wrote before that mail icon started working for 3 days ok. Well this evening I got that error pop server message again. What a PIA. The only thing I did tonight was download an app to have verizon icon on phone. Personally I hate Verizon but I am sticking with it fir the time being

I have redone the passwords etc with same ones but that did not help either I have to go to Apple.

Glad yours was resolved

For the past couple weeks my iPad mail is not updating. Since I am using Verizon mail now AOL mail, I contacted AOL about this problem and they recommended creating an imap account using same password as my POP account. Whenever the IOS mail does not update, I have to go to AOL mail and sign out and sign back in. This immediately causes the IOS mail to update. It happens with the imap account as well as the POP account. I sent AOL my imap settings which they said were correct and blaming the Apple IOS mail client as the problem. I have had no problems like this until 2-3 weeks ago. I have the latest IOS updated system. This problem also exists on my Mac laptop running Siera, which i also added a imap account. It is a nuisance having to get into AOL mais in order to update my mail. I have no desire to use AOL mail! Anyone have a similar problem.

i have what seems to be a similar problem that just started 2-3 weeks ago.

AOL said to create an imap mail account using same password as my POP mail account, i did and verified with them I had correctly created the imap account. But it still does not update my mail unless I go into AOL mail and sign out then sign back in.

The Ipad mail updates immediately. AOL blames it on the iPad mail client. I have the same problem on my Mac laptop. I assume the error message is to check your mail settings as that is the message I get. I have been using ever since Verizon switched to AOL mail and not had an issue until just recently. Apple ought to look into this issue since AOL blames on the Apple mail clients. I too have have no desire to read my mail on AOL mail!

Hello ... I was curious if you ever resolved the issue with AOL. I too was having the same exact issue (and AOL has been my main email for 15+ years)

At first I thought I’d been hacked. Then I was so desperate that I was actually considering upgrading to a new phone thinking the problem was internal. For now I’ve downloaded the AOL app and access my mail that way -what a pain- but at least I still have access. Now my yahoo and gmail account are the only accounts that have been successfully added to my “MAIL” account through my iPhone. I can no longer access my AOL that way.

I’m hoping you have a solution to this craziness!!

Have you had any luck with the server issue with AOL? I too have been having the exact same problem. I am long time AOL user and now I’m unable to use my standers iPhone MAIL app to access AOL. I can only access it through the AOL app that I had to download. I’ve tried everything and to always comes back with IMAP AOL server error. I even considered getting a new phone just to resolve the issue . With my luck, I’d prob end up with the same issue.

I’m hoping to hear you found out how to resolve this issue!!

Thanks ... Gina 🏼

All I can say is that it seems to be working today, but who knows about tomorrow.

I do not have an iPhone, but use mail on my iPad. Are you uptodate on IOS?

i did follow their (AOL) recommendations to create an imap account with the specifued incoming and outgoing settings and port settings since I was using POP setup. You might try contacting AOL mail by email as they do respond. The more complaint, maybe they will not be so quick to blame Apple mail client.
