Slow Mac Laptop

My MacBook Pro laptop (2012) has been acting up lately and has been very slow. The webpages take forever to load, as well as the applications. I have the latest updates installed (Mac OS high sierra) . I went through some posts and saw that they suggested to do the EtreCheck. I did the report but am confused on how to approach the problem to solve it. I attached the report below. What should I do to clean out the problem?

EtreCheck version: 4.1 (4A162)

Report generated: 2018-03-07 11:56:12

Download EtreCheck from https://etrecheck.com

Runtime: 8:32

Performance: Below Average

Problem: Beachballing

Major Issues:

Anything that appears on this list needs immediate attention.

No Time Machine backup - Time Machine backup not found.

Corrupt filesystem - This machine shut down due to a corrupt filesystem.

Minor Issues:

These issues do not need immediate attention but they may indicate future problems.

Upgradeable - This machine’s RAM could be upgraded and the mechancial hard drive could be replaced with an SSD. This would dramatically improve your machine’s performance.

Clean up - There are orphan files that could be removed.

Unsigned files - There is unsigned software installed. It appears to be legitimate but should be reviewed.

Low performance - EtreCheck report took over 5 minutes to run. This is unusual.

Make a backup now. The report indicates a corrupt file system. Boot into Recovery Mode and choose Disk Utility > First Aid. Run it until it reports no errors or it reports that it could not be repaired.

You want to get an external USB hard-drive and make a back-up of your files.

I have the same Macbook Pro mid-2012 upgraded with 16gb ram and a 500gb SSD.

It performs great now. No problems and No beach balls.

Ultimately you want to have your Macbook Pro upgraded with at least 8gb ram and at least a 256gb SSD.

Replacing your conventional hard-drive with and SSD is the single best improvement you can make to your Macbook.

If you can only afford one thing them replace the hard-drive with an SSD. At least a 120gb SSD.

With 4GB High Sierra isn't leaving you much room for applications to run and the computer is forced to use virtual memory which is slow with a rotational hard drive. At the top of the report there are major issues and minor issues mentioned. Given your description of a computer slowing down and the EtreCheck report taking 5 minutes to complete, one thing that seems plausible is that your hard drive has issues. I also note that you haven't configured TimeMachine. If you aren't doing backups any other way, get an external drive now and back up the computer. Disk Utility can report on your drive's SMART status which is a semi good drive health system - semi good because if your drive fails SMART the drive is in eminent danger failing but if the report says passing it might be just about ready to die.
