Apple Carplay does not read all text messages out loud.

I have a 2017 Hyundai Sonata. My iPhone connected to the usb in the car, carplay is open and I ask Siri to read text messages. Siri will read the first message received. If I get any subsequent messages and ask Siri to read it, Siri will not read out loud. Siri will act as if it's read, and will show a message asking if I want to respond or replay.

This happens sporadically, not sure the rhyme or reason. How do I fix this?

I would like to recommend these two help articles:

1. Get help connecting your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with your car stereo

2. Set up CarPlay to use with your iPhone

The first article has options to try depending if you are connected via bluetooth, a USB connection, or through CarPlay. The second article is specifically for CarPlay. There are many good troubleshooting steps provided in both articles. Since you did not mention what iOS version you are using, there is also a step to help you check if your 2017 Hyundai Sonata car stereo needs an update to work with your iPhone 7 or the iOS version, stating:

6. Check your car’s manual for help. You might need to install firmware updates for your stereo.

I have same issue with 2017 Hyundai Sante Fe Sport. If I reply to a message and then Siri asks “read more messages?” I have to answer “no”, otherwise she reads the next message silently.

Instead I say “no” and then once back at main menu I ask her to read messages. Very frustrating.

And I have the latest firmware.

Also, I can’t play a message straight from a notification - that’s guaranteed to be a “silent” read. I have to wait until the notification disappears and only then do I ask Siri to read it.

I don’t have an answer for you, but I can tell you that it’s the Hyundai and not the iPhone. I have had 2 Elantras with the same issues and used 8 different iPhones. I can take those same phone and plug them into my moms GMC with Apple CarPlay and it works just fine. When I got my first Elantra in 2016 ( 2017 model) it worked fine. When Apple updated in October it quit working. I replaced my car in March of 2017 with an identical 2017 model and have the same issue. I’m guess something needed to update with the car that didn’t get updated in their software.
