Minecraft stopped working well on High Sierra

It's a recent thing, it was working well a couple of days ago, before my iMac started hanging (beach balling) and freezing all of a sudden.
It stopped hanging a few hours later and now it seems to be "back to normal" except for that Minecraft now lags too much. And it's Vanilla, not even modded. It lags with optifine and all video settings that can be are turned off or low.

This is the thread I had posted about my iMac hanging, it only had 2 replies and no follow up.

I had already reinstalled Java, I think I need an uninstaller or perhaps I have an older version somewhere still.
That was creating me some trouble on the Twitch launcher for MineCraft.
Would you happen to know which folder I need to save to keep the servers I play on?
Thank you so much again, I was beginning to lose hope.

Hi, thank you for your reply 🙂

I did see Google chrome helper eating up all that RAM in the Activity Monitor before posting this thread, I had tried quitting Google Chrome and switching to Safari instead, but that didn't fix MineCraft, (it did quit all the Google Chrome Helper processes.)

In reply to your list:

  • I quit the first Google Chrome Helper in the activity Monitor's list, it killed the first tab I had open (Facebook.) Now I have a kernel_task instead using up 579.9 MB. Quitting more kills other tabs. However I had already tried playing MC using only one tab on Google C. There are more Google Chrome Helpers in the A. Monitor than there are tabs open. I'm going to post and come back to edit this reply, just in case it tries to quit it too.
  • There are no other Google icons anywhere in the top menu bar nor Dock.
  • I've never used Safe Mode before, so I've watched a video, it seems easy, I'll go do that now and return to edit.

Hi rasamalai,

Can you please run EtreCheck on your Mac and post the results here? It’s a tool recommended by Apple Support Communities and it might show what the problem is on your Mac.

EtreCheck can be downloaded here: https://etrecheck.com/

Try reinstalling Java. Minecraft relies on Java in order to run. Java can be downloaded here: https://java.com/en/download/

Have you tried reinstalling Minecraft? Preserve your worlds by navigating to ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/saves. Copy all the worlds in there to your desktop, then navigate to ~/Library/Application Support. Delete the minecraft folder, then delete Minecraft from your Applications folder. Then, reinstall Minecraft from here: https://minecraft.net/en-us/download/

Run Minecraft and create a new world, then quit Minecraft and navigate again to ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/saves and copy all of the worlds on your desktop back into Minecraft.

Hope this helps!

Looking over the EtreCheck report, I'm seeing a suspicious process named "Google Chrome Helper". It's using up a lot of CPU resources (51%) and RAM (3.26GB). Google Chrome itself (the actual app) is only using 14% of CPU resources and 415MB of RAM. If you can terminate Google Chrome Helper process and/or prevent it from running, Minecraft should run a lot smoother.

EtreCheck displayed what items you have set to launch automatically upon login, and unfortunately Google Chrome Helper wasn't in the list. I was hoping that its removal from that list would fix the problem.

Is there any kind of Google icon in the top menu bar? If so, click it, then look for an option to quit it. Check your Dock as well for any kind of Google icon other than Google Chrome.

To terminate the process itself, open Activity Monitor on your Mac (found in /Applications/Utilities) and find the Google Chrome Helper process. Then, click the Terminate button (looks like a stop sign with an X) to kill that process. Hopefully it won't relaunch itself until the next reboot. Extra information about Activity Monitor can be found here: Use Activity Monitor on your Mac - Apple Support

If all else fails, try booting your Mac in Safe Mode by holding down the Shift key while you restart your Mac. It will take longer to boot your Mac since your Mac will do multiple checks in the background and prevent any startup items or login items from opening automatically. Then, run EtreCheck again while in Safe Mode and see if the Google Chrome Helper process still appears in the list. It also may be worth running Minecraft in Safe Mode and see if it runs any faster or smoother. To leave safe mode, restart your Mac without holding any keys down.

As for saving your list of servers, I have no idea how to do that in regards to what file that is stored on. However, you can take a full screen screenshot using Command-Shift-3 or a selection screenshot using Command-Shift-4.

Hope this helps!
