MacBook Air 2017 freezes while playing Minecraft

I have a MacBook Air 2017 that I recently updated by accident (I usually press "try again tomorrow" when the system would ask me if I wanted to install available updates, but I hit "restart" by mistake) so it is now running MacOS Mojave 10.14.6. I am also running the most recent version of Java. Prior to updating, Minecraft would open and run normally without any issues, so long as I kept the computer elevated such that it wouldn't overheat. I was even able to play with forge, mods, shaders, and texture packs installed, as well as in multiplayer mode.

I am not sure if the update and the game freezes are related. This is what happens when I encounter the issue:

• I make sure the computer is cool and elevated, and turn my air conditioner on.
• I open the Java Launcher and press "Play" without issue
• The game window opens
• I enter my Minecraft singleplayer world and begin playing
• No more than 1 - 3 minutes pass before the whole computer freezes
• The MacBook is not hot or even warm to the touch when it does

The freeze is severe, the computer does not allow me to force quit the application or move the cursor. I am forced to turn it off through the power button in order to use the computer again. I found my issue to be similar to this one https://discussions.apple.com/thread/251317990, although heat no longer seems to factor into whether the game freezes.

I tried deleting all forge files and game versions, mods, shaders, and texture packs, but the problem persists. I also tried resetting the SMC, and running the Apple Diagnostic test. However, the test only identified one possible issue (Ref. Code PPP007) and when I pressed "Get Started" to try to address it, it was trying to load a webpage for over half an hour. My Wi-Fi was working fine at the time.
