Question:

Question: Who actually owns my Apple ID?

One of the problems I have is dealing with all my email addresses and the various Internet Service Providers.

When I bought my iPad, I had to obtain an Apple ID from the Apple company. I could not use another email address and ID.

Therefore is the Apple ID my personal property? Is it something that I now own?

If I quit Apple and go with a different product can I continue to use the " "@icloud.com email address indefinitely?

I would be interested in a legal opinion on the ownership of the Apple ID. Hopefully there are lawyers in the community that understand this issue. For example, if I sell my Apple product, does my Apple ID have to be deleted? Or can I continue to use my email address with another hardware product?

The Apple ID is yours to use.

The Apple ID is different from an e-mail service, even if it looks like that and often goes together. If the Apple ID is associated with an e-mail capable device, then you get to use a mailbox with that ID. If you register an Apple ID without any device, you do not get a mailbox for that ID.

The Apple ID is not tied to a product, but to a person. You can deregister devices associated with your ID. The idea is to continue to use that ID with other Apple products that you may own in the future.

If you get rid of all of your Apple products and buy only Android (please don't do that—Android stuff has so many bugs and security issues), you would still have your Apple ID. Apple will not take away or alter your Apple ID account.

You can always contact Apple's Legal Department here: Apple - Legal - Contact

You are telling me that the Apple ID is not tied to a product, but to a person and that Apple will not take away or alter my Apple ID account. Therefore I assume it belongs to me as long as Apple is around. We all have different emails and I just want to know if I can continue to use it with an app like MS Outlook and a third party ISP without owning an Apple product. Thank's for the legal department link. I'll give it a try and see if the account is mine indefinitely.

You should be able to use it with Outlook, but you will probably need to enable 2 Factor Authentication on your Apple ID and create an app specific password to use. If your account won’t allow 2 Factor Authentication, try 2 step verification.
