Original photo export from Photos

How does one export original photos out of Photos? None of the export or share options seem to offer this standard and much-needed feature. I can only see various jpeg/tiff/png options in Export/Custom. Not sure why Photos is designed to be so impossibly hard to use!

That's not working here… either with or without the option/alt key, I cannot drag a photo to another app, or Dock icon as has always been possible in the past

Did you try publishing to the Desktop?

Dragging to another app can only be done if the other app has been updated to work with the new system and Apple applications and then it's done thru the media browser in the Import menu of the 3rd party applications.

The drag and drop to the Desktop does work with High Sierra:

If screenshot is not animated Control (right) - click on it and open in new window.

Boot into Safe Mode, Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode, and try dragging to the Desktop with the Option key held down. Any improvement?

Automator has no native Export action for Photos, but you can download more actions from https://photosautomation.com/

These additional actions include "Export Media Items":.

This service is working for me and can be launched from the Services menu in Photos.

But it is not possible, to include the sidecar files with IPTC data when exporting this way.

You would have to us a "Run Apple Script" action instead and include the code to export the selected images with an XPM sidecar file.

it is not hard at all - file menu ==> export ==> export unmodified original

Sharing is not exporting and sharing does not offer sharing the unmodified original - only exporting offers exporting the unmodified original

This has not ever changed

Not sure why Photos is designed to be so impossibly hard to use!

Every single item you own from your refrigerator to your lawnmower to your car is impossible to use if you do not use it correctly - you can not bake a pie in your refrigerator or vacuum your house with your lawn mower or export from Photos with the share feature - no one can design a product that a user can not misuse

Hi Larry, thanks.

It may not have changed in Photos, but in iPhoto, which I used until a few days ago, it is a clear export option. This is a sensible place, rather than having to manually navigate into a menu for an item with no shortcut command and existing outside the other export options for no obvious reason. It is going to make using Photos pretty tiresome, but at least it exists, I suppose.

I've used Macs for years and don't often scroll through menus because I am able to use much more efficient shortcuts.

I only pressed Sharing because I thought the terminology for moving my own photograph had changed. I had not expected it to export an original. Standard Export does NOT export the original, as you pointed out previously. I wonder if this is oversight of UI design, or deliberate obfuscation?

1 - Photos is not iPhoto - is it a new and different program with different features adn different work flows so of course iPhoto work flows are not hotos work flows

2 - again Photos has a very clear export option in a very sensible place - you are exporting a file using the file menu ==> export which has no changes a bit since iPhoto - both have an export command under the file menu - no change and both very logical

And both iPhoto and Photos have a help menu which if you type export into will show you export command much more efficiently than logging onto a web site, finding a forum and posting a question and waiting for an answer which may be hours away

There is no command for exporting original photos. It has been moved out of the Export shortcut, and ALL of the other export options. You pointed this out previously. It is not the same as it has been for 20 years, it has, inexplicably been moved, and not provided with a keyboard shortcut. Yes, this is a poor UI update. Photos itself feels very unfinished and rough around the edges in any case.

Hi Old Toad,

In fact, I can't even do this to Apple Mail or other Apple standard apps, as has previously always been the case in OSX. This is a major loss of functionality. Nothing will drag out of Photos. One used to see a small green dot with a + when dragging out a file. This seems to no longer work in High Sierra. It is making normal working on a Mac a whole set of peculiar workarounds.

his was a major Finder feature built in all the way from System 6. There is no longer a sensibly workable, or universal file moving method in Mac OS.

I have tried a few Photo Library apps in trial mode. I tried Unbound, but this has no export function at all, not even dragging. Lyn has this (what used to be) standard functionality. One can drag to photos to whatever app can accept image files, no problem.

I think I'm ditching Photos. It just seems so rough and unfinished compared with other photo library managers. The inability to copy out my own photos, as well as the inability to view filenames easily. It's clear the designers didn't really know what (or why) they were doing when designing it. It is a desperate disappointment. I slightly regret the update to High Sierra and the loss of iPhoto, a greatly superior (for all its own caveats) app.

No? I have never heard of this? There is no Publish option in my Photos app. Even the Help menu does not find this?

I am just trying to drag the photo thumbnail to either Apple Mail or WhatsApp. This worked with iPhoto, and works with Lyn. There is clearly something up with Photos, or at least my copy of it.
