iPhone 6s, I turned on iCloud and a lot of my contacts disappeared

Since nobody else has responded to this...

I'm a bit hazy on iCloud details but I wonder if what happened is your device Contacts are now syncing with what you had on your computer and that didn't have all the contacts. When you turn it on all your devices sync to a common database in the cloud but presumably it has to start somewhere.
