AirPort Extreme firewall.

The firewall on my 10 yr old AirPort Extreme is causing connectivity issues with internet to smart TVs.Thats what Directv thinks.Should I get a new router?I don’t want to disable anything and make me vulnerable.Just not that informed on the subject.

It is well and truly time to replace a 10year old domestic router of any brand. In fact it is about 5 years overdue.


Just for your info..

There is no firewall in the airport extreme.


Some people call NAT a firewall.. even Apple.. but it is not a true firewall.. and it cannot be turned off.


Tell us a bit more about your Internet service.

Who is your ISP?

What make and model modem?

Is it also a router?

Do you have double NAT? There will be a problem listed in the airport utility on your AE if that is the case.

Could your ISP be running a proxy. That will stop TV streaming.. you might need to ring your ISP to find out.

Or they could use what is called CGNAT which won't show up as double NAT but is still really double NAT and acts like a proxy.


My recommendation is to see if you can borrow a non-apple wireless router and see if that fixes the problem.. if it does then I would also tend to recommend you go with a new non-apple router.

I was actually streaming via my blue ray.A stereo company set it up that way because we had connection issues.I hadn’t used it for years.My husband got Netflix for his iPad for entertainment while traveling.I went in to the Netflix app on the tv and discovered it didn’t work through the Blu-ray any more.I read a similar post to mine from 2012.I have u-verse and use their modem.It has a built-in router but decided to keep mine.Tech tried using their router too.Still won’t connect.He told me too call Geek Squad.They are useless.Ill call my stereo guys I guess.

We're happy to help, but we really need to understand your network hardware and configuration. A "blue ray" device can be connected to a network, but it doesn't provide one so, in your case, streaming would be from the Blu-ray to a HDTV. Would you please provide the make & model of this Blu-ray device?

Again, unless this device has some sort of built-in network routing capability, it can't provide Internet access for your HDTV or for the Netflix app running on it.

If the U-verse device is actually a combination modem and router, also known as a gateway, it would be the main means for your network to gain Internet access. If you use the AirPort Extreme with it, then you may have a "Double NAT" configuration which may be the cause of the problems you're having with connectivity.


Do you have the Extreme connected to this gateway by wire or by wireless? Do you know if either the gateway or the Extreme are reconfigured as bridges? That is, have their respective routing functions disabled?
