Why do my music videos keep having their play count reset?

I have a random issue that occurs on my iPad but not my iPhone, even though both run the latest iOS

if I am playing anything tagged as a music video and stop halfway through (or even after more than just a few seconds) its play count automatically gets reset to zero. This is annoying as I have collated my library over a long period of time, plus they all then keep popping up in my unplayed list

any idea why this might happen? Doesn’t happen on the Mac either
