Can credit from iTunes Gift Card be transferred to my PayPal account?

Hi guys. I bought an iTunes gift card today in Ireland for a friend in the U.K. The guy in the Apple store a couple of weeks ago told me that it could be used and I’ve just discovered it can’t be used in a different country. I’m quite annoyed by this as he specifically told me I could use it anywhere. He obviously had no clue! I wonder could the funds be transferred to my paypal account in any way? The gift card is absolutely of no use to me here in Ireland. SO frustrating! Thanks in advance!!
