what is MobileSync in the Library folder?

The MobileSync folder in my Library folder is 103.54 GB. What info is in here, and why is it so big?

Is this the folder where text messages are backed up?

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6), 3 GHz core duo, 8GB RAM, Mdl A1286

clicking on mobile documents opens iCloud Im running latest version of Catalina. If I open the Library in my Home folder it opens as my iCloud , is this a back up, cos its taking a lot of hard disc space. thx
