Milanese band waterproof or not?

When I bought my Apple Watch gen 3 with the Milanese stainless steel loop band the sales person told me it was waterproof. Now I am reading articles it is not. Which is the right answer?

It's a metal mesh band... there's nothing about it to be compromised by water. Chemicals in the water (chlorine, etc) may cause it to discolor, but there's nothing 'not' to be waterproof about the band...
