Final Cut Pro 10.4 unusable with the slowdowns

I purchased the new version to go with high Sierra upgrade on my 2012 MacBook Pro. 2.5 intel core I5 with 16 gig of ram. Is there a patch or settings to change? My old version 10.1 was much much faster...what do I do to get it to where I can use it again? Can't play through any of the transitions, any edits I make wont show as I review and play. Totally useless at this point.. any ideas?

Where is your media stored? Internal, external drive? How full is it?

What media format and frame size?

You may try switching the viewer from high quality to better performance.

I kept playing around with this and discovered I had not brought these specific clips in as proxy media. Once I had converted all the media, it was good to go. Thanks for the reply.
