You should give a receipt to the other party, and that party should provide you with a receipt. Each should contain all identification information like serial numbers and descriptions. Each receipt should be signed by both parties - recipient, and vendor.
Even the seller (i.e., the original purchaser) cannot normally exchange a MacBook outside of the 14 day return policy period. Returns & Refunds - Shopping Help - Apple
