iPhone maps no voice commands in iOS 11.2.6

this was covered in a previous post but one step was missing


iPhone Maps doesn't speak directions


Where it says


  1. Open Maps on your iPhone or iPad and enter your destination.
  2. After you tap User uploaded file to get directions, swipe up on the Route Card.
  3. Tap Audio.
  4. Tap the volume level that you want for Navigation Voice.


You also have to go to the bottom of the Navigation Voice screen and turn on HFP


It is supposed to turn on automatically but it appears in iOS 11.3 it doesn’t


Hands-free profile (HFP) allows navigation prompts to play through your car speakers when iPhone isn't selected as the audio source. When you pair your iPhone with Bluetooth, HFP turns on by default.

My understanding is that the HFP setting has been removed, presumably because iOS enables it by default.


HFP allows navigation audio to come over Bluetooth as if it were a phone call (i.e. can override any audio source the car stereo is using, including AM/FM). If your stereo does not support HFP, then iOS can use A2DP audio for navigation (i.e. your stereo's Bluetooth AUX input) but you must leave the stereo using that input while navigating.


Not all manufacturers support HFP, or implement it correctly (possibly including Apple). What are the symptoms of the problem you're experiencing?

As I stated....I had no sound for turn by turn guidance

Once i was paired with my car and in Turn by Turn mode I saw a "speaker" Audio icon at the bottom of the screen

I clicked on the icon and there is an HFP selection.

I turned it on and a now have sound with turn by turn guidance with Apple maps.

In past versions of iOS the switch was there in settings.

It went away in 11.2.6

This may not be a problem for everyone but of you have no sound this can be a solution


This issue occurred with my iPhone 8 and the Nav system in my 2017 Subaru Outback
