No Video with Netgear WGR614v6

So... I've read it all in here... My old netgear router died, I had never had any ichat problems with it. I bought a new netgear router, the fancy one with "wireless" no less. (WGR614v6).

So here we go:
- My home setup is three computers so I cant' do port forwarding.
- I have tried Port triggering as shown in several posts here and it's a no go.
- I turned of port triggering and turned on UPnP and that didn't work either.
- I disabled SPI Firwall in the WAN setup menu
- I have all correct ports open on all machines in the sharing pref pane.
- I can connect to all the tests machines that I found in posts here. (appleu3test02 for example)
- I changed my quicktime stream to 1.5M
- I have bandwith set to NONE in ichat preference/video
- I can connect to some people but not to others. It's very strange. This goes for PC or none PC users. All these people I could connect to before.
- My ISP was Comcast which was just bought by Time Warner (Would this be it?)
- Skype works with everyone of course !!!
- I had to set my server port in ichat to 443 at first to even connect but somehow today I put it back to 5190 and it works.
- When I launch an AV chat, I get "Video starting..." and then I get an error type 8

Hi Paul

Turn off or disable the Port Triggering settings and just use UPnP.

Your device you say has SPI Does it have DOS (Denial of Service) on the the same set up page ? (it might not if it has SPI)

We need the log from that last error 8 to the first line that Binary Images please.

Why don't you try setting your quicktime stream to 1Mbps. I was having the same problem and it worked for me, thanks to Tony in the UK.
Go to system preference/quicktime/streaming

Ralph, as I wrote, I did turn off Port triggering and turned on UPnP.
My device has SPI which is disabled and does not have DOS.
My firmware is the latest for this device Version 2.0.13_1.0.13

I will try 1 Meg (for Quicktime) but I have a feeling that won't do it.

points out the ports have moved out of the iChat ones.

This suggests a NAT problem and a second device also doing NAT
Tony will probably tell me, but is this Netgear a Modem and router combined or do you have another device that is also doing NAT ?

Another possibility is that you are wired and wireless to this device at the same time.

My modem hasn't changed for the past 3 years and is separate from the router.
The router is a wired/wireless router but my mac doesn't have a wireless card so it only talks to the router through a wire. I also have an airport connected to this router but that airport isn't distributing an IP.

Unplug the router, the airport and the modem.
After a minute, pulg the modem, then the router, at lashe airport.
This prevents the airport from stealing the IP.

Hoi Paul,

In the WAN set up page does your Netgear have SPI or DOS ?

If it has DOS disable it.

If it is SPI it should be able to be disabled or at least any setting adjusted to allow the amount of iChat data needed for video chats.

I have the same router (WGR614v6). A few family members have the same router, some don't use any router. I can iChat fine with someone that isn't using a router. But as soon as both ends are behind a router the iChat fails.

I've tried port forwarding, port triggering, UPnP. I've done a lot of research.

The only thing that works is to move my computer in to the DMZ and disable the SPI firewall when I want to iChat with someone that's behind a router.

I'm strongly considering trashing the WGR614 and buying the new Airport Extreme. Or, take another step, and get a Sonicwall TZ150 Wireless.

That sounds about right, as soon as someone has a router on their end, it doesn't work. Wow what kind of stupid router did I buy ?
I would love to use DMZ but I have three macs that need to run ichat. The DMZ thing will only let one mac work properly right ?

Argh...

I'll try moving my mac into the DMZ "zone" and report.

Right, one computer at a time can be in the DMZ.

I found that I had to put the computer in the DMZ and turn off SPI in order for iChat to work with another computer behind a firewall. Let me know if you find differently.

Hi Paul and Paul,

Using UPnP and having SPI Off should do it.

I am not sure why it does not.

I have a Netgear DG834GUK which has the DOS setting in the WAN page (Instead) and it works with UPnP.

Well I tried and it still doesn't work..
It goes through the Video chat starting and then I don't get an error, I just get, the party has declined the invitation. And that's it. Tried several times with the same results. !!! Argh !!!! DMZ was on.

Are you using static or DHCP IP addresses? I use static. And mine worked by putting both my computer in the DMZ and turning SPI off.

I see Ralph suggests turning SPI off and turning UPnP on. That's worth a shot too.

If you want to try another test...remove the router from your network. You can use Internet Sharing on one of the Macs to share the 'net with all the wired computers on your LAN. Then try an iChat and see what happens. This isn't a long term solution, but it'll be interesting to see if iChat works when the router is out of the network.
